Restaurant Review: Katalina’s Bakery

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Yale chapter.

At Spoon University – Yale’s launch party this past Friday, there was a lot of this going on:

As soon as people descended into the Davenport Dive, all eyes were immediately drawn to a particular tray filled with sugary creations. And, after consuming these delicacies, everyone looked a lot like this:

Who should we be thanking for the exaggerated and celebrity-like reactions? Katalina, owner and founder of Katalina’s Bakery. She has been baking fresh and delicious cupcakes, cookies, brownies, bars, whoopie pies, muffins and just about any other sweet treat imaginable since 2011.

At the launch party, I sampled devoured both red velvet and oreo cupcakes. Each bite was perfectly moist (why don’t people like that word?) and had a killer frosting-to-cake ratio, making the entire eating experience a memorable one.

Katalina’s has a wide variety of flavors to choose from with unique names, such as The Yale Bulldog and Funny Bone, and funky flavors like Fig Pear and Vegan Coconut Lime. And, if you’re ever in the mood to learn Katalina’s secret recipes, cooking classes are also offered.

But Katalina’s excels in more than just cupcakes. For my suitemate’s birthday, we decided to change things up and, rather than order Claire’s famous Lithuanian Coffee Cake (gasp!), we purchased a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting from Katalina’s. Let me start off by saying that the cake was delivered in perfect condition to our door (because who has time to walk anymore?). The creation looked and smelled so appetizing that we had to stop ourselves from eating it before the birthday girl arrived. Finally, when we had sung and done all of those time-consuming things that must be done before the cake can be eaten, we each enjoyed a slice (okay fine, we each had three) of chocolatey perfection.

If you’re in the mood for a little pick-me-up in between classes, or you’re looking to treat someone for a special (and sweet) occasion, Katalina’s is definitely the place to go!
