The Best First Date Spots for Every William & Mary Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at WM chapter.

First dates can be stressful, especially when you can’t decide what to do. Luckily, there’s something for everyone in the ‘Burg. Whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert, an artist or an athlete, there’s a first date that fits you. Pick your poison from our five unique options.

1. If you’re artsy and down-to-earth:

The Culture Cafe is a perfect place to start your date. Its cozy interior gives a welcoming vibe to everyone that walks through the door, and the food is meant to share. Try sitting upstairs for your first date – the lighting is romantic and you’ll have more privacy. Plus, the Cafe is always quiet, so you’ll be able to have an actual conversation. Afterwards, take a walk down Scotland Street towards Mermaid Books to find some good reads. Better make this a lunch date – the bookstore closes at 5.

2. If you’re fun and sporty:

Start the night at DoG Street Pub in Merchant Square; either sit at the bar (if you want a view of the tv) or outside (if you want fresh air and a quieter setting). Try a traditional English dish – I recommend the Bangers & Mash. DoG Street is a little pricier than Culture Cafe, but it’s definitely worth it. They usually have a sports game on at the bar, but if not, go to a college ball game after the meal. Nothing screams “romantic first date” like a loud, sweaty gym. But seriously, they’re a lot of fun.

3. If you’re a kid at heart:

Try Retro’s on Prince George Street for some classic American cuisine – this is the closest thing to a classic diner near the College. Maybe split a milkshake while you’re at it! Or, try Kilwins for some ice cream. Then, if you have a car or if the weather’s bad, go play laser tag at Tactical Adventure Games. If not, go canoeing on Lake Matoaka. Either way, you’ll work off that meal and boost your adrenaline, which scientifically makes your first date better!

4. If you’re classy and sophisticated:

Make a reservation at Blue Talon if you want a semi-fancy dinner date. You’ll have to dress a little nicer for this one. If you don’t wanna break the bank, go on a Thursday night and ask about the student discount. They have a good selection of wines and other drinks, but if you’re looking for more, try Fat Canary for wine tasting and the Cheese Shop for cheese pairing. Later, see what show is playing at the Kimball Theater, or see an exhibition at the Muscarelle Museum of Art.

5. If you just wanna grab coffee:

If you want a low-key first date, get drinks at Aromas on a Saturday or Sunday morning. They have regular coffees and teas, coffee smoothies, and seasonal drinks, like hot apple cider. Since it’s usually pretty busy, try sitting outside, or take a stroll around Colonial Williamsburg. If you go during the winter, go ice skating on the rink first, and then warm up with your hot drink (and hot date)!
