The 10 Best Coffee Shops to study at in KW

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll agree that finals season is probably the worst time of year– and the last place I want to be is at the library. The one thing I’ve learned during finals thus far, is that you can never overdose on coffee. I’ve rounded up the 10 best coffee shops to study at in KW (Kitchener-Waterloo) for those of us who cannot be remotely successful in the library.

All of these places are close to campus, perfect for studying, and serve some of the best espresso in the area. In order to optimize your studying and ace those finals, take the time to step away from the crowded campus and grab a coffee at one of these 10 coffee shops.

1. Balzac’s Coffee Roasters

The first Balzac’s opened in Stratford, ON – close to KW, so this is one you do not want to miss out on. The atmosphere here is quaint, bright and charming, perfect for spending your whole day here. Their drink list is one of a kind and be sure to try the chocolate chip cookie, you will not regret it.

Location: 256 Philip Street, Unit F.

2. Starbucks

This classic coffee shop is always an option in my mind. With so many locations in KW, you’re sure to always find a seat. Grab a seat at the bar or a table, and try something new– Starbucks is always introducing an abundance of seasonal drinks and baked goods. This classic option is a must for a break from the library this finals season.

Closest Location: 247 King Street N.

3. Williams Fresh Café

Williams Fresh Café has plenty of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options so it is easy to spend the entire day here. Whether you’re in the mood for coffee, a smoothie or a dessert, Williams has it. Definitely an option when switching up your study plans.

Closest Location: 33 University Ave.

 4. Settlement Co.

Make sure you arrive early if this is your coffee shop of choice, as Settlement is a Waterloo favourite, and tables fill up fast. The bright atmosphere and abundance of plants make you feel like you aren’t inside, and that beats the library any day. A variety of toasts and waffles are offered which make for the perfect study snack, along with their many coffee options.

Location: 23 King Street N.

 5. Coffee Culture

This spot is always packed with students because it is a perfect studying option. With large tables and plenty of natural light, this coffee shop is perfect for a full day of getting work done. Coffee Culture has an array of drinks, baked goods and both breakfast and lunch options. A perfect place to go to prepare for these dreaded finals.

Location: 31 King Street N.

 6. Seven Shores

Seven Shores is a community cafe located close to campus in uptown. They offer tasty, healthy food options to keep you studying all day long– try one of their scones with a latté for the perfect combo. There is a large table in the back room here – if it is not booked be sure to grab a seat here as it offers the most amount of space to spread all your books out.

Location: 10 Regina Street N. Unit 4.

 7. Princess Café

This option is considered one of the best coffee shops offering some of the best soups and panini’s in KW. This charming café is perfect for a day’s worth of studying, and when the grind is over be sure to grab one of their craft beer offerings before you go.

Location: 46 King Street N.

 8. Smile Tiger Coffee Roasters

This option is a bit further from campus, however a charming spot perfect for studying and offering the best coffee. On a quiet side street, this coffee shop offers plenty of seating and large tables – perfect for when you need to get serious work done.  You will not regret the trek for this one, and be sure to try out their variety of toasts.

P.S. this one is definitely my favourite.

Location: 100 Ahrens Street W.

 9. DVLB (Death Valley’s Little Brother)

This charming coffee shop is located uptown, an ideal location in regards to campus. It serves a variety of coffee roasts, teas, and pastries (the best study snacks). However be sure to arrive here early to snag a spot at the large table. When the exam grind gets to be too much, this place turns into a whisky bar at night. Need I say more?

 10. Café 22

Café 22 is one-of-a-kind, and perfect for a more laid-back study date. Whether you want a meal or just a snack, they offer the perfect pairings with a cup of coffee. Be sure to take some time and visit this café in the heart of uptown Waterloo.
