I’m going to be honest. London’s coffee scene isn’t what I would consider to be “thriving”.
This doesn’t mean we should have to resort to Starbucks or Tim Hortons for our caffeine fix (not hating, just tired of the same old). With that being said, I decided to take it upon myself to scout out the best places to grab a coffee in London, so you don’t have to.
Whether you’re looking for a basic brew or something more elaborate (Pumpkin Spice lovers I’m talking to you), these places have something for all coffee addicts.
Locomotive Espresso
408 Pall Mall Street
Located east of Richmond, this quaint coffee shop is truly a hidden gem. Named one of the top 10 coffee shops in Southern Ontario by blogTO, you can count on this place for your caffeine fix. Featuring Toronto based Pilot Coffee Roasters, Torontonians can enjoy a little piece of home when they buy their coffee from Locomotive. In addition to their delicious coffee menu, Locomotive also offers a delectable menu of baked goods and sandwiches with gluten free options. On top of all of that, they also have a toast bar where you can pick from a unique selection of breads and spreads for only $2. Score!
My pick: The almond milk latte (they always do nice latte art)
Fire Roasted Coffee Co.
105 King Street
Located at the corner of King and Talbot, this London based company is committed to providing customers with the best cup of coffee. They brew the classics, as well as some more unconventional beverages including Italian sodas and seasonal latte flavours. They also have a wide selection of baked goods, including oversized cookies and fritters, and a local beer on tap that they switch up often. The cafe is spacious, with a smaller back room for those who want a quiet spot to study.
My pick: The turkish spice latte (it has a good kick to it)
Black Walnut Bakery Café
724 Richmond Street
Located right on Richmond Row, this independently owned cafe is a convenient place to stop by on your way to class. They roast their aromatic coffee on site so you know you’re getting a fresh cup every time. They serve various breakfast and lunch options, including quiches and made to order sandwiches. And while you’re there, you should pick up one of their homemade baked goods because they are hard to pass up (I recommend the cruffins). Whatever the occasion, this place has you covered for all your coffee and comfort food needs.
My pick: The Americano Au Lait (it’s so smooth)
Coffee Culture Café & Eatery
260 Dundas Street
This place is like Starbucks without the attitude. Located in the heart of downtown, this coffee chain is brewing everything from the basics to their signature ‘CCinos- which is a great pick if you enjoy Frappuccinos® from Starbucks. They also have a wide selection of food items including breakfast sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and decadent desserts. The large seating space equipped with complimentary wifi and a fireplace will help make this coffee stop your new study haven.
My pick: The pumpkin spice latte (it’s rimmed with orange sugar)
The Root Cellar Organic Cafe
623 Dundas Street
Located in the Old East Village, this local farm-to-table restaurant happens to serve amazing coffee. With its rustic brick interior and fresh, organic grub, it’s a great place to stop by for brunch and on the weekend. The menu caters to those with food allergies by offering many gluten free, vegetarian and dairy free options. When you buy a coffee from here, you can feel good about your choice, because you’re supporting a restaurant that’s all about promoting sustainability.
My pick: The gingersnaps latte with almond milk (they also make homemade cashew milk you can ask for instead)
Hasbeans
130 King Street
Located in the Convent Garden Market, Hasbeans has been roasting quality coffee since 1969. I was blown away by how many coffee bean varieties they had on site, all of which are organic and fair trade. You can see their micro roaster in action as they brew their featured blend right in front of your eyes. The staff are also very friendly and passionate, which is always appreciated. If you’re a coffee connoisseur, this place is worth checking out.
My pick: Any of their daily blends, you can’t go wrong!
Turns out, London’s coffee scene isn’t looking to shabby thanks to these awesome places. And while we’re on the topic of coffee, be sure to check out these creations that are almost too pretty to drink.
