Asheville has long been a home to an eclectic group of travelers, students and locals. Although most people only think about it for the picturesque backdrop (located in the middle of the Great Smoky Mountains), the food scene here has rocketed. A short drive from many schools and big cities, taking a quiet weekend vacation to Asheville has never been easier. With its huge variety, even the pickiest eaters will find something they’ll like — guaranteed! Keep reading to discover some of the best food that Asheville has to offer.
High Five Coffee Shop
Start at High Five Coffee Shop, a fun and expansive coffee shop with espresso drinks and light food. Drop in to check out their specials (Waffle Wednesday is always observed), or try their unreal sourdough croissant. They even have house-made syrups for their own fun concoctions: the “Cone Mills Twins” has house-made ginger lemongrass syrup, cold brew concentrate, and lime juice. The baristas are also super helpful, so if you’re curious about any of the drinks, just ask! For all you caffeine lovers, make sure check out these local coffee shops as well.
All Souls Pizza
After a nice hike, hop in your car and make the short drive to All Souls Pizza. Located in a re-purposed Greek diner, All Souls locally sources all of their ingredients, and even mills their own grains. Try the Cremini, Spinach and Onion Polenta pizza (gluten free, too), or the Sausage, Onion, and Fontina. They even have a selection of pressed paninis made with house-baked bread. If you think leftovers will be a problem… think again.
#Spoon Tip: To avoid a long wait, try dropping in on Friday or Saturday afternoons instead of during peak dinner hours.
Sovereign Remedies
If you’re looking for fun, creative cocktails and delicious small plates, look no further than Sovereign Remedies. From a classy yet cozy bar area downstairs to a more intimate dining area upstairs, you wouldn’t believe that you’re in the middle of a small town in North Carolina. The chickpea fries are a must, as is the Carolina Golden Rice: crispy garlic, seaweed, and pickled green daikon. With seasonal cocktails created by each member of the staff, such as the Blood Orange mimosa and the Anti-Hangover tonic, you will never get bored of their menu.
Sunshine Sammies
With pre-made combinations or a make your own sandwich option, there’s no way you won’t find something you’ll love at Sunshine Sammies. From classic cookies (snickerdoodle, chocolate chip and sugar) to other fun options (graham cracker or pecan) these cookie sandwiches are definitely bucket list worthy. For the pre-made combinations, the lavender cookie with earl grey ice cream is subtle and tasty.
Hole Doughnuts
Last but not least, stop by Hole Doughnuts to grab a few sweet treats for the road. Voted “Best Dessert of 2016” by Bon Appétit, the rotating three doughnut menu makes it possible (maybe too possible) for you to try out all of the flavors. Unique and interesting, the sesame and almond coated doughnut is a nice complement to the melt in your mouth, original glazed. Plus, the cute truck outside is always a cute photo-op. Getting the half dozen with two of each flavor is definitely key: a need, not a want… you’ll understand!
