Why You Need to Make Swingin’ Pinwheel Your Brunch Spot

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UVM chapter.

Swingin’ Pinwheel is a family owned bakery and cafe, located in the heart of Burlington.  They advertise themselves as offering a delicious twist on the traditional breakfast and lunch, and believe me they do. They have a creative and fun western atmosphere and the food is amazing.  Next time you wake up before two, grab a few friends and share a few plates at Swingin’ Pinwheel.

This is the perfect breakfast for when you are hungry and want something to satisfy your every need.  The all star of this dish was the home fries.  Whenever you have home fries in a restaurant they never have that perfect balance of crunchy and soft.  These home fries were amazing; put a little ketchup on them and I was in heaven.

Before you bite into this, you’re not expecting the flavors you are about to taste.  I was expecting to bite into a traditional egg and hollandaise sauce, and was very happy that it was nothing but traditional.  This was an amazing mix of flavors.  The house chilly added a little spice, and created a nice balance with the poached egg.

A wafflini is Swingin’ Pinwheel’s signature flaky pastry, baked in a waffle iron. There are six different combos you can choose from, from sweet to savory.  We chose the mango, poblano, red onion, and brie wafflini.  Sometimes having a pastry for breakfast can be too sweet, but this was the perfect amount of sweet.  The mango was the perfect fruit to match with the brie.

Apple Dumpling

I decided to save the best for last.  I love sweet and have tried just about everything.  This apple dumpling was a life changing experience and I’m still craving it hours later.  This is a sweet breaded pastry with an apple in the middle.  The pastry is put on a vanilla creme, with sugar sprinkled on top.

Swingin’ Pinwheel is definitely the hidden gem of Burlington brunch spots.  Their dining room is quaint and quiet.  Whenever I go out to brunch I always have to wait and when I sit down it’s so loud I can’t have a conversation with the person across from me.  If you go without having brunch here, you’re severely missing out.
