From Carnitas to Creemees: Little Gordo Makes Its Appearance on S. Union St.

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UVM chapter.

You might have noticed a little construction on the former Union Scoops window on S. Union St. in downtown Burlington. On June 30, this little spot became the new home of Little Gordo: a creemee stand that was the brain-child of Taco Gordo, another well-known dive in Burly.

Manager Henry Mizrahi, in an interview with Seven Days, described Little Gordo as a “natural expansion” of Taco Gordo’s COVID-19 takeout model. As the pandemic forced many restaurants to either close their doors or offer socially-distanced meals, Mizrahi and his team found an opportunity to better support themselves financially, while also making people smile via ice cream. Employee Ken Martel says the window is the “perfect kind of food exposure for COVID,” as patrons can order and either sit at the adjacent (socially distanced) picnic tables or take their cones to go.

The menu at Little Gordo is simple, but with a twist. While patrons can find classic creemee flavors like vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and maple on the menu, they might be surprised to see burritos and nachos as well. These offerings provide a feeling of connection to their parent location, as well as more variety for their customers.

What flavor should you get for your first Little Gordo creemee? Martel recommends the sweet cream base for its rich take on the traditional vanilla. You can also order a “wizard:” a creemee blend with candy or other fun toppings. Their s’more wizard combines a chocolate/vanilla twist with graham crackers, chocolate, and toasted fluff.

Vegan flavors are currently in the works, but the window does sell vegan Curly Girl pops from a local vendor. They’re looking to expand their hours and offerings to suit a wider range of customers within the coming months.

Little Gordo is open from 2pm to 9pm Wednesday thru Saturday.
