Stockholm might seem like a random place to visit, but after my visit, I told everyone to put it at the top of their list. Not only is the city gorgeous and full of culture, but the food there was incredible. Every store, restaurant, and even metro stations looked as if it was plucked out of an anthropology ad. It was as if every store had a hipster decorator.
Here is the itinerary my friend Hannah and I used (plus everywhere we ate, don’t worry) to be able to tackle this city in only three days.
Friday:
Fika at Snickerbacken 7
This coffee shop was amazing and our first experience with Fika. Fika is a magical time where you sit, relax, and eat cinnamon rolls and drink coffee. This particular coffee shop had a relaxed décor with an all white, black, and grey color scheme. It was also attached to a store that only sold black and white clothes which made it very chic. I had avocado on sourdough bread and a cinnamon roll. Great start to a great, food-filled weekend.
Dinner at B.A.R.
Hands down, this was the busiest restaurant we went to all weekend. The food explained why this restaurant was filled with people. I ordered cod fish, fries, and broccoli with aged cheese. However, one does not simply order fish at B.A.R.
You go over to the fishmonger, choose the exact piece you want from a wide selection of cuts and types. The fishmongers were extremely helpful and answered all of my ridiculous questions and gladly translated the Swedish menu for me. You then are able to choose the sauce you want with your fish. Heads up though – while this restaurant may seem too good to be true, that’s because the price reflects the service and freshness. It was a pricey place but, in my opinion, worth the splurge.
Saturday:
Fika at Chokladkoppen
Day two means Fika #2. Have I mentioned how much I love this meal? Chokladkoppen is an amazing coffee shop/lunch spot because not only is it super reasonably priced, but it is also right next to the Nobel Museum and a two-minute walk from the royal palace. All of these places are on the island of Gamla Stan or the old town.
We had a chocolate chip muffin because they looked amazing and, of course, had to get another cinnamon roll. Both were delicious. The cinnamon roll was fantastic and HUGE.
Lunch at Chokladkoppen
Yep, we loved this place so much we went back for lunch. I got an amazing turkey sandwich with veggies, mayo and Swedish mustard, which is on the spicier side but still delicious. I also tried their hot chocolate and it was amazing.
Dinner at Bacaro
At this restaurant, I had really yummy pasta with tomato sauce and avocado. It was a simple dish but completely hit the spot because it was warm and comforting after the cold day in Stockholm. We just went walking around our hostel on Ringvagen and stumbled upon this cool bar where we decided to eat dinner.
Sunday:
Fika at Vete Katten
By far the best Fika we had all weekend. We ordered tea, a piece of chocolate cake, and this amazing strawberry dessert. Everything in the counter looked amazing. If it is even possible, it was more delicious than the picture shows.
Lunch on the island of Sodermalm
We just found some random place and it was nothing special. However, we did have a super nice waitress who gave us awesome recommendations of where to go for dinner. Tip of the day: talk to the natives and ask about food because they know what’s up.
Cheese and Tea at Urban Deli
This deli was awesome. It was based on a Brooklyn deli and it really had a Brooklyn-like vibe. Urban Deli was half market, half bar/restaurant. Hannah and I sat at the bar and ordered the cheese special, which was Parmesan with truffle honey. We tried eating at this place all weekend but the dinner menu was pricey and we already had our fancy meal for the weekend. Eating at the bar totally hit the spot and I was so glad to make it there.
Dinner at Nytorget 6
This was a delicious dinner suggested by a local. The décor was very cozy and the lighting was dim as if a fireplace lighted the room. Also, the music was on point with older American hits ranging from Jay-Z to Natasha Bedingfield.
I had lobster rolls as an appetizer, falafel for a main dish, and mint chocolate fondant (aka lava cake) with vanilla ice cream. Needless to say, it was incredible. It was a great meal to end a great weekend.
