The Ultimate Black Friday Survival Guide

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UTM chapter.

It’s the day after Turkey Day, and we’re all thankful for the feast from the night before. Any avid bargain hunter knows not to let yesterday’s food coma get in the way of today’s shopping. Before you hit the mall for Black Friday, make sure you’re prepared with this handy kit.

Backpack

With the crowds rushing around you, you’re sure to get knocked sideways carrying a purse or lunchbox. Pack everything into a backpack so that you can navigate the crowds.

Bonus: You can even put some of your purchases inside, so your hands are free to snatch up the goodies before everyone else.

Coffee

Since you’re most likely waking up well before dawn, you’ll need to kick that groggy feeling with a good old fashioned dose of caffeine. Brew a pot at home so that you’ll have more money for bargains and won’t waste your precious time in the never-ending Starbucks line.

If your relatives don’t have a coffee maker, you can bring your own supplies to alleviate your caffeine cravings. Drink a cup (or pot) before you go, and pack a thermos for later.

Pro tip: Make it a latte for an extra dose of protein.

Water

Don’t let dehydration cramp your style. You may still feel full, but water will keep you hydrated. If you still feel bad, check out these other ways to beat bloating.

Protein-filled Breakfast

You can bring a danish if you want to attempt to be Audrey Hepburn, but most people need more than a Danish to keep going through the madness of Black Friday. Pack this easy power breakfast with three types of protein or some power bars for a quick protein-filled breakfast you can eat in the car.

 Trail Mix

After your adrenaline wears off from snagging the last pair of boots in your size, you’ll be ready for more provisions. Pack some of these exotic trail mixes as an easy snack that you can munch on throughout the day. The dried fruit will give you some fiber. You’ll thank me when you’re standing in the mile-long checkout line famished.

Candy Canes

The sugary confection provide you with a quick burst of energy to power through one more store and put you in the holiday spirit. Don’t be the only person without one.

Bonus: The minty freshness will help your breath if you forgot to brush your teeth after oversleeping your alarm.

Leftovers

Nothing else can quite compare to thanksgiving leftovers, at least the first day. Convert your leftovers into a Thanksgiving sandwich, so the rest of your family doesn’t eat all the good meat.
