CBD Ice Cream in DTSP

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at USFSP chapter.

What is CBD? CBD stands for cannabidiol which is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients in cannabis. While CBD doesn’t create a “high” affect like that of cannabis (marijuana), it is said to have various health benefits including anxiety and pain relief.  For more information on CBD and it’s health benefits you can click here.

CBD can be consumed in various ways, but CBD food infusions have become an increasingly popular trend.  People enjoy putting CBD in some of their favorite foods/drinks such as smoothies and ice-cream.

Plant Love Ice Cream, is a thriving Saint Petersburg business in the Edge District that offers CBD infusions as well as vegan ice-cream! JoAnn Matchin and her son Mateo are the owners of the store that opened its doors in January 2019.

Plant Love Ice Cream has 10 different flavors in their case at all times and approximately 60 different flavors that are in rotation. However, Golden Milk is the only ice-cream that they infuse CBD into.

“We added CBD to our Golden Milk ice-cream and have it available to add to any flavors people choose,” Matchin said. “Adding CBD to ice cream gives a person the same benefits that are gained no matter how it is ingested,” she continued.

What does CBD taste like you might ask? Matchin said that the CBD flavor is undetectable in their ice-creams. Customer favorites include Pistachio, Molten Chocolate, Snickers and Cookies n Cream.

“We developed the concept for the shop after finding that there was a lack of high quality vegan ice cream available,” Matchin said.  “We started using CBD in the ice cream from day one.”

Their menu items include flights, cones, sammies and pints.

Flights are for the customers that love variety, as you can try five scoops of five different flavors. They also offer vegan and gluten free cones for those that enjoy a little bit of a crunch.

The ice-cream “sammies” are kind of self explanatory, but Plant and Love offers local AND gluten, soy, GMO and diary free cookies that you can put ice-cream in between. According to their website, new cookies are coming soon!

If you are interested in trying some of their delicious concoctions, you can find them at 953 Central Ave N.

Plant and Love is only a seven minute drive from campus, but if you are feeling lazy, they also use PostMates, a food delivery service.

Their hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 1 pm to 11 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 9 pm.
