As college students, we’re in a time of our lives where we don’t have a lot of patience for the unappealing and strenuous, especially when it comes to food. Eating at the dining hall every day can be boring, and good luck trying to go to an expensive restaurant downtown. Luckily, there’s some cool hot spots around Durham and Portsmouth that are affordable for our kind of crowd where we can get the most out of every bite.
The Big Bean
Thank goodness it’s not a giant legume. This small, yet bustling place serves up unique, gourmet dishes. Rather than rushing to feed the masses, they focus on small batches and prepare food from scratch. They use only the best, seasonal ingredients and compost nearly all their waste. When you walk in, you’re given serious independence at their self serve coffee station and with their self seating style.
Roundabout Diner & Lounge
For a classic retro themed diner, drop by the Roundabout. You’ll experience a classic diner-like feel since all the furniture and decor has not been recreated, but is in its original form. From griddle classics to scrumptious omelettes, this diner will satisfy your late night cravings. When you go, make sure to try the coconut cream pie, as it’s been said to be the best around.
Sunny’s Restaurant
Located in Lee, NH, Sunny’s lives up to its name. Its friendly staff and charming atmosphere will cause you to leave bright and cheery. Their soups and sandwichs are tantalizing to the tongue, with reasonable prices and great breakfast options that make for the perfect Saturday morning meal.
The Soupery
Located next door to another delicacy, The Juicery, The Soupery delivers high quality soup made with fresh ingredients. Their soup is crafted in small batches to be nice and hot for each customer and there’s no added preservatives. They even offer gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian options.
Gilley’s
Located in downtown Portsmouth, this dive is a hidden gem. No, really. It actually won the award as The Phantom Gourmet’s Hidden Jewel. These simple dishes show how grilled cheese, burgers, and hot dogs done well can be just as powerful as that new organic creation at the hipster hut across the street.
