How many times has a friend called you “basic” for eating or drinking something pumpkin-flavored? It’s basically becoming a common part of the American English dialect. I say “pumpkin!” You say “basic!”
However, those pumpkin smashing people should learn a thing or two about the orange, melon-like, fall staple, before bashing their PSL-ordering friends. After reading this article, they’ll see that pumpkins are actually anything but basic.
Pumpkins? Basic? See below to Michelle Tanner’s reaction:
1. Pumpkins are fruit
Say whaaaaat? Pumpkins are a fruit that many think are a vegetable due to their appearance and savory natural taste. A fruit that is mistaken by many as a vegetable. They’re starting to make strawberries look more basic by the minute.
2. There are 45 different types of pumpkins
You read that correctly. While the usual suspect in the fall is round, orange and perfect for chilling on porches, “pumpkins come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors,” according to a Fox News report. Some of the notably unique names include Cinderella, Fairytale and New England Pie.
3. Pumpkins are part of the gourd family
Pumpkins, watermelon, cucumbers and zucchini are all members of the Gourd Bunch. Not many plants can claim that they are both a fruit and a gourd. Basic, begone.
4. They represent a holiday
The whole month of October is when stores especially stock up with pumpkin-flavored offerings, and October 26th marks National Pumpkin Day.
The orange fruit is commonly thought to represent Halloween, as people decorate their porches with jack-o-lanterns to celebrate. Safe to say that pumpkins are a pretty big deal. I mean, how many other holidays are represented by a single food?
5. Pumpkins double as decor and dessert
When visiting your nearest pumpkin patch, you pick up a few pumpkins feeling good about their multi-functioning capabilities. You can either transform the pumpkin into pumpkin pie or cook its seeds, or you can decorate it with paint or carving technique. Crafting and cooking capabilities? Definitely not basic.
Plus, let’s not forget when the Fairy Godmother turned a pumpkin into a Royal Carriage to take Cinderella to the ball. This fact alone proves that pumpkins are not basic. The end. Case closed.
