Spring is in the Air. As the days get longer and people start to find more time to maintain a healthy routine, what we eat can have a lot of impact on our health. It is important to eat fruits and vegetables that provide us with the right amount of nutrients to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

As we enter into a new season, some of the produce in our local grocery stores will be in its freshest state while also being more affordable. Here is a list of 5 types of produce in Georgia that have the best flavor profile during the Spring . 

Strawberries 

This sweet, delicious fruit thrives during the spring season. Strawberries are packed with vitamin C and support a healthy immune system, making you less prone to getting sick.

Arugula 

Arugula is a tasty, peppery vegetable that provides a good source of vitamins such as A,C, and K. A great way to have it is in replacement of romaine lettuce for your salad base for a higher nutritional value. 

Beets 

Beets are an extremely earthy vegetable with a high concentration of iron. They contain health benefits that lower your blood pressure and support heart health.  If you don’t want to eat them raw or cooked, blend them with an apple, carrot and orange for a nutritious juice to start your day. 

Kiwi 

Kiwis are a tropical fruit known to have the best flavor between the months of November to April. That makes spring the perfect time to indulge in this sweet and firm fruit where the price is low but the flavor is high. 

Asparagus 

Asparagus are a low calorie, nutrient rich vegetable that taste the best during the spring. They are a good source of inulin, which is a prebiotic that helps feed healthy bacteria in your gut. This tender vegetable is delicious grilled on the side with roasted potatoes and salmon.

Heres a quick recipe for a Strawberry Arugula salad:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups arugula
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1/4 cup goat cheese, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Toss arugula and sliced strawberries in a bowl.
  2. Add goat cheese and walnuts.
  3. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
  4. Season with salt and pepper, then toss gently. Serve immediately!
