Lift every fork and eat. The first of February also marks the first of Black History Month, a time to celebrate the history and contributions of African-Americans. Without some of these contributions, such as potato chips, traffic signals and the Super Soaker, our lives in the US would be very different .Our Athens community wouldn’t be the same without these Black-owned restaurants in Athens.

Mannaweenta
Venture out of your comfort zone and try some Ethiopian food at Mannaweenta. Mannaweenta came to the Athens area in 2015 through the businesswoman, Haregu Bahtu. This Black-owned restaurant is a place where Ethiopians/Eritreans can have a taste of home and others can try a cool new dish that will satisfy their taste buds. Bonus: Check out the amazing story of how Mannaweenta came to be on their website.

Slutty Vegan
Slutty Vegan is on its way to becoming a household name. Founded by Pinky Cole, the ever growing franchise made news when it decided to open up a location in Athens. This creative menu offers something for plant-based eaters, while still offering delectable food for meat-eaters yearning for a new taste. I especially love this Black-owned restaurant because it offers fish-inspired meals that don’t trigger my allergies.

Dawg Gone Good BBQ
If you attend the University of Georgia, you have definitely heard of Dawg Gone Good BBQ. If you haven’t, I suggest you take a trip to West Hancock Avenue ASAP. If you miss your family members’ grilling or are spending the 4th of July in Athens, give this store a quick visit and pick up some delicious barbecue. With these reasonable prices and saucy ribs, you won’t regret it.

Kelly’s Authentic Jamaican Food
Another cultural spot is Kelly’s Jamaican food. If you need some spice and tang in your life, stop by Kelly’s to get some jerk chicken. Kelly’s has been homed in Athens for over twenty years and is beloved for two reasons: Jamaica-born Chef Kelly and the food. Even those who are not Jamaican get a sense of home when eating this food and can tell it’s made with love.
