The 4 Best Places to Find Fresh Produce in Athens

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UGA chapter.

We’ve all been there.

You’re browsing the produce section of Kroger or Publix, and every item seems to be from Mexico, California, or anywhere but here. Don’t get me wrong – I love me some out-of-state munchin’, but it feels a little weird eating an apple that traveled hundreds of miles to the store when I barely wanted to drive a few miles to buy it. Talk about an unbalanced relationship. #clingy

Enter local produce markets. They’ll make you feel trendy, healthy, and 100% committed to your community. We scouted out the Athens area to give you our top four places to stock up on fresh produce.

Athens Farmers Market

This spot definitely has a special place in our hearts. Not only are the fruits & veggies on point, but you can also grab some incredible fresh bread, pasta, and pastries if you’re all about that carb life (who isn’t). Head over to Creature Comforts on Wednesdays from 4-7 pm or Bishop Park on Saturdays from 8 am – 12 pm to stock up. Check out their website for a comprehensive list of all the produce and goods they offer each month.

West Broad Farmers Market

Community driven and education oriented, this market is big on encouraging a neighborhood-based economy. Plus, you can take a nice walk around the property to look at the cool gardens and mural. Make your economics professor AND your art professor proud all in one trip. Check it out on Saturdays from 10 am – 12 pm or just hit up the produce stand on Tuesdays from 4-7 pm. Find directions, vendors, and deets on their website.

UGArden Produce Stand

If you want produce specifically nurtured by your fellow dawgs, head to UGA’s official garden on South Milledge. A large portion of the produce grown here is distributed to local families in need through Campus Kitchen. Some produce is also shared with the students at Clarke Middle School for cooking and sampling through UGA’s outreach program.

The fields are pretty awesome, too, so definitely check them out to see where your hippie classmates spend their free time. The produce stand is available Thursdays at 4:30 pm, and you can read up on the garden here.

Daily Groceries Co-op

Our final pick is a consumer owned cooperative business (a.k.a. community owned grocery store). It’s a great spot to show your love and support for local businesses and food providers. PLUS, it’s a full grocery store + deli so you can do all your shopping in one place. Efficiency for the win. The co-op is open every day from 9 am – 9 pm and is located on Prince Avenue. If you want to visit, get involved, or you’re still confused about what this place actually is, head on over to their website.

Lexi is studying journalism and music business at the University of Georgia and will graduate in 2018. Her love language is food (especially cereal), and she’s not afraid to make a mess or two in the kitchen. Tortilla chips, sweet potato fries, pumpkin bread, and pretty much any other carb (she doesn’t discriminate) make her foodie world go round. Consuming raw fish and meat gives her anxiety.
