There is no better way to spend your time than grabbing a hearty brunch with some friends. Humble Wood Fire helped me do just that when they invited me and two other Spoon UF members to try food from their brunch soft launch.
Of course, we readily agreed and carpooled to the cozy restaurant, brimming with excitement to try more of Humble Wood’s delicious food. We were greeted with smiles and led through the warm, welcoming restaurant to the bright seating outside. The temptation to huddle up together under the amber lighting and soak in the rich scent of the wood-burning pizza oven was strong, but we opted to sit on the wood deck outside with a cool breeze and natural lighting.
We began by trying their lattes before scanning the menu. The coffee was rich and aromatic, made with high-quality beans. Perfectly sweet and creamy, these lattes were the perfect pick-me-up after a late night. We really appreciated the numerous milk choices to suit vegans and non-vegans alike.
Next, we delved into the menu and spent nearly ten minutes deciding what we wanted to get. There were only six items, but we just could not pick between all of the delicious choices. Every option had a vegan version, something completely unheard of for brunch restaurants. As a vegan, I was over the moon and slightly overwhelmed at the monumental choice before me. Crispy home fries or creamy vegan hollandaise sauce? Who could choose?
After a vigorous internal debate, I settled on the Spuds a la Grande. My friends got the Baird Building Benedict and Grit Bite Ranchero, both of which looked absolutely delicious. Once the food arrived, we marveled at the vibrant colors. The contrast between the bright red, juicy tomatoes and the light green drizzles of avocado crema created visually stunning dishes. The portions were generous and we could not wait to dig in.
The home fries in the Spuds a la Grande (center) were perfectly crispy, well-seasoned, and had a beautiful brown crust on the outside. The insides were fluffy, creamy, and the perfect contrast to the melty vegan cheese on top. The sautéed vegetables on top were warm, herby, and deliciously caramelized. The added vegan crema was the perfect addition to make the hefty scramble even more decadent. I ordered freshly squeezed orange juice on the side and savored the very tart addition to my breakfast.
Of course, we sampled each others’ dishes and debated which we liked best. The grit bites came in first place. A crunchy exterior made way for a soft and creamy filling that was perfectly salty with an added sweetness from what tasted like bell peppers and garlic. Next was the avocado crema. This creamy sauce was pleasantly tart yet mild, cutting the acidic pico de gallo with an indulgent richness. Finally, we all agreed that the home fries were one of the most delicious items on the menu.
After devouring our dishes, we had just enough room for something sweet. We headed back inside and grabbed a vegan buckwheat chocolate chip cookie, maple walnut scone, and blueberry muffin. The cookie was crunchy on the outside but rich and chocolatey on the inside. The buckwheat provided an earthiness and heartiness, while the numerous chocolate chips melted in my mouth. The scone was surprisingly moist on the inside with a sweet, crumbly exterior. The walnuts provided a buttery crunch and a mild, nutty flavor. What really stood out was the blueberry muffin. The incredibly moist interior contrasted the crunchy, sugary top beautifully. With tart blueberries and a sweet cakey interior, this muffin was the perfect addition to our iced coffees.
