The words “coffee” and “study” have been synonymous since the beginning of time, and Starbucks has no doubt become a popular social scene for students who enjoy taking selfies featuring their Venti raspberry lemonades and color coordinated raspberry pink lipstick (no judgment, I do it, too). Unfortunately, while it’s fun to chat over a peppermint mocha, Starbucks is no longer a viable study option for those of us who need a quiet environment to focus on school work on or around campus. And let’s be honest. It’s just SO basic.
So where can you study while still satisfying that coffee craving? Have no fear, these local cafés offer a healthy dose of caffeine while maintaining a quiet place for work.
Pascal’s Coffeehouse

If you like the jazzy Starbucks vibe, you will love the calming blend of classical music and coffee grinders at this study spot. Pascal’s Coffeehouse, which is associated with the Christian Study Center of Gainesville, has created little study rooms with their bookshelves to section you off from other patrons, all while keeping you just steps away from a barista. Located across from Library West, it’s well worth the walk over. If you normally get a Chai latte at Starbucks, we recommend you try the London Fog here, which is a blend of Earl Grey tea, vanilla and steamed milk.

Karma Cream

While the coffee is still a must, Karma Cream is first and foremost known for their tasty vegan treats. With delicious ice cream flavors like Liz Lemon cookie as well as freshly baked pastries and desserts daily, this study spot is perfect for late night study munchies. Karma Cream is great for when you’ve been at the library all day and need a change of scenery, and is relatively small with a lofted study spot upstairs. It’s also similar to Starbucks in that they have a rewards system for loyal customers. Pro Tip: Like them on Facebook, because they post nearly every time a fresh batch of baked goods comes out of the oven. If you study at Starbs for the treats, you will love this place.

Volta

Volta just might be the trendiest coffee shop in the greater Gainesville area. Though their menu isn’t as extensive as Starbucks’, the ever-so-strong Guatemalan coffee and super fresh cinnamon lattes more than make up for it. If you love a Starbucks scone, you will crumble over Volta’s stellar fall spice scones (maple glaze and all).
Since Volta is located downtown, it doesn’t get as congested with students, thus making it a more peaceful atmosphere than spots closer to campus. There is local art on the walls, and the music is a combination of Yeasayer and Beach House, which is great for staying focused.
