2025 Girl Scout Cookies, and Their Ancestors

If you are choosing to indulge in the cookies sold by the sweetest merchants, my biggest recommendation is to steer away from the caramel chocolate chip ones. This is not to say these Girl Scout Cookies don’t taste good, but they are really just a chocolate chip cookie. Instead, give one of the 11 other flavors a try, and I’m sure you’ll find your new favorite. That being said, let’s give a few of these stars a taste.

Cookie Review

Adventurefuls

First on the menu are the Adventurefuls. These brownie-inspired cookies are covered with caramel and sea salt for a perfect mix of sweet and salty. When tasting this one, it reminded me of a slightly harder fudge brownie, but in cookie form.

Samoas

The next one I tried was the Samoas, a coconut cookie base topped with caramel and chocolate stripes. While I am not a big coconut fan, this mix of flavors and chewiness blends perfectly together, making for a well-rounded sweet treat.

Thin Mints

My last try, and one I surprisingly enjoyed, was the Thin Mints. I am not a mint advocate at all. I have always said that mint flavors remind me of toothpaste, and ironically leave a bad taste in my mouth. However, I have to disagree with myself about these Girl Scout cookies. With just a thin layer of mint chocolate coating the cookie, it is still light and flavorful. I can now slightly agree with my mint lovers on this popular cookie. P.S. I’ve heard they’re even better frozen.

The Winner

Out of the three flavors I tried, I do have to say my favorite was the Samoas. While they were all very tasty and I wish I had gotten to try all of them, this exercise made me consider the history of the Girl Scout cookie franchise. What makes them so special?

108 Years of Girl Scout Cookies

The beginning of Girl Scout cookie history did not include the plethora of flavors that exist today. The now diverse set of flavors started out with just a few sugar cookies. The original varieties were known as Sandwich, Shortbread, and Chocolate Mints. These were vanilla and chocolate flavored sandwich cookies (similar to an Oreo), a shortbread cookie, and the chocolate mint. The last one is the close relative to the modern favorite, Thin Mints.

Soon enough, the flavors expanded into a peanut butter flavor, trefoils, and another 6 flavors, coming to a total of 8 flavors. These flavors were 80 years in the making! Since then, the company has expanded its palette to a diverse range of flavors, making them a perfect snack choice for any sweet tooth, even for gluten-free and vegan lovers too.

After reading this article and before the season ends, make sure to stop by your nearest grocery store or check out the Girl Scouts website to find the nearest seller to you, https://www.girlscouts.org/en/cookies/cookie-flavors.html. Seriously though, RUN! They sell out faster than you could eat an entire box.
