Spoon UDelhi is the Delhi chapter of Spoon University, an online food publication. Spoon was started by college students in Northwestern University as a platform for students to share everything they knew about food, and then spread like wildfire across many colleges in the United States. The Delhi chapter is Spoon’s first international chapter and went live on 30th March 2015. Since then, our family and community has been growing consistently.
Ever since we started out, we’ve been regularly answering multiple queries on what Spoon is all about. So we decided to put all of it in one place and sum up our love for Spoon in form of 9 reasons why Spoon rocks.
Here’s what some of our members have to say:
1. Spoon is all about food, and food is our first love.
“Because food is happiness. After a rough day when I visit a food joint and the place smells of fresh bakery or Italian sauce, my mood switches. We leave the place with smiles on our faces and through Spoon we give that happiness to everyone by sharing and writing about food,” says Nidhi Dayal, Spoon UDelhi’s Community Manager (HR).
So Nidhi loves Spoon because she is able to bring a smile to a person’s face each day.
2. Spoon helps us know our peers better and provides us a platform to reach our community.
“DU is spread across Delhi. As members of Spoon, we get to meet people of our age from different colleges,” says Shirin Bhasin, who works as an Editorial Coordinator with Spoon. She also adds, “There is no other known platform where college students can talk about their love of food. This way, we can discuss, and realize that there are others like us.”
Here’s what Veenisha Tutlani, who writes for Spoon, has to say: “It provides a platform to share food recipes and experiences on a daily basis. And being a food lover, I love it.”
3. We get to learn about how online publications function.
Okay, I admit there are a lot of content websites (#competition) coming up everyday. But we don’t worry about them because here at Spoon UDelhi, we have a team at the Spoon Headquarters in NYC, who are always there to guide us when we get stuck. They ensure that the content we publish is up to certain standards, and that the process is always smooth.
Adding to this, Spoon UDelhi’s writer and Instagram Coordinator Shikha Singh says, “Working for this food community not just helps in providing us with innovative ideas to beat our hunger pangs, but also polishes our skills by providing us the insight into how an online publication is managed and handled on a big scale.”
“It’s all about food and you get the perks of doing food photography/journalism,” says Sonal Chanana, our Community Manager (Marketing).
At the HQ, the Spoon University team makes awesome videos (check out 5 O’Clock Fridays), and also featured student-made food videos in Times Square (going by the name #IMadeIt). Opportunities like these are hard to come by.
4. We realize the real value of food.
As a kid, I would’ve won an award for being the kid who wasted most of the food she had, if they ever announced an award like that. Not any more. As I read people all over the world write about the multiple food related problems we face, I realize how important food is for mankind. #preach
5. You get to add many feathers to your hat.
At Spoon, no one’s role is predefined, per se. You could be a writer and a photographer, a marketer and a videographer, or all of the above. There’s no limit to learning and the environment is extremely relaxed. You can dabble in whatever you want, and for me, that’s definitely one of the best parts.
6. It looks great on your resume.
Well, duhh! Food Journalism is niche. And Spoon’s articles are regularly featured on BuzzFeed Food, Yahoo! Food and the likes.
Imagine writing thaaat on your resume. I know you’re dreaming about it already.
7. A team meeting means trying out a new eating joint together.
If you haven’t realized how much we love this yet, here’s what will make that obvious. We love our team meetings! As a community of food lovers, we always try to find new places to conduct our meetings. Because, a) we might find a new cool place to write about and b) more #foodporn for our Instagram #spoonfeed (@spoon_du, if you wanna know).
That makes all of us look forward to our team meetings, to the point that we consider our Tuesdays sacred.
50 Things to Eat in Delhi Before You Die is the proof of how much we’re learning about good food here at Spoon.
8. You realize that you’re a part of something bigger.
It is a great feeling to know that something you’ve written or clicked – your words, your thoughts and your work – is being appreciated by someone who is on the opposite side of the globe. It really makes all of this worth the effort.
“Every time we hold an event or publish an article, we realize that we’re part of not just Spoon UDelhi, but of a bigger, global community. And that is what I love most about Spoon,” says Kritika Narula, Spoon UDelhi’s Founder and Social Media Coordinator. (Yes, she’s the one who brought Spoon to Delhi. And aren’t we glad?)
9. You get to share your views on other problems too.
With Spoon we realized that we might live in different corners of the world, but the problems and challenges the millennials face are not really that different. Health shaming, fat shaming, skinny shaming, eating disorders – we’ve all been there.
“I get to write about and discuss food related issues which are close to my heart – like why body stereotyping needs to stop. I basically work to eat, indulge in #foodporn all day, and share my love of food with everyone,” says Aakanksha Joshi, our Editorial Director. (Just kidding…that’s me, haha.)
I think that more or less sums up why everyone at Spoon loves it. Next time you want to explain Spoon to someone, send them the link to this article.
Peace out.
