As someone who is Asian-American, I love seeing Asian flavors gain popularity in the culinary world. One such area has been beverages—viral ube lattes, passion fruit teas, and yuzu lemonades have all made waves in recent years. Los Angeles is home to a multitude of innovative cafes, and one standout is SERIES A COFFEE, which offers tasty drinks and a great study atmosphere. (Address: 8328 Wilshire Blvd Beverly Hills, CA 90211)
Located in Beverly Hills, SERIES A COFFEE is about five miles from UCLA, or a roughly 40-minute bus ride. They serve a rotating menu of coffee, tea, pastries, and more, with a focus on Asian-inspired flavors. This was my third visit, and each time, there’s always something new on the menu.
The Taste Test
I’d like to highlight four different drinks I’ve tried across visits, including 3 espresso-based lattes and 1 matcha latte. With such a wide selection, there truly is something for everyone.
Sweet Potato (Goguma) Latte
First up is the Sweet Potato (Goguma) Latte, one of their new items. This latte caught my eye immediately with its beautiful layers: the rich brown coffee is topped with a white cream top layer and dusted with purple sweet potato powder. This latte has an earthy sweetness that pairs beautifully with the espresso’s slight bitterness. The light cream top reminds me of a marshmallow, and when coupled with the other elements, creates a smoky s’mores-like flavor—only more complex.
Roasted Grain (Misugaru) Latte
Next is the Roasted Grain (Misugaru) Latte, another one of their new items. This latte was super cute and topped with a cereal that was similar to Honey Nut Cheerios. Its crunchy texture was a great addition to the smooth latte. The roasted grain added a nutty, earthy flavor that complemented the espresso well. It was almost malty, adding another dimension to this latte. Compared to the Goguma latte, the grain flavor was more subtle; instead, the espresso was more profound. It was also less creamy and sweet, making it a great choice for those who prefer a bolder coffee flavor.
Corn Latte
The Corn Latte was the first drink I ever tried at SERIES A COFFEE, and it remains one of my favorites. The natural sweetness of the corn pairs wonderfully with the creamy milk and slightly bitter espresso, creating a caramel corn aftertaste reminiscent of kettle corn. It’s subtly sweet rather than overpowering, elevating the latte rather than masking the espresso flavor. The corn kernel garnishes on the latte are an aesthetic touch as well, making this drink as visually appealing as it is delicious.
Strawberry Matcha Latte
For those looking for a lower-caffeine option, I highly recommend the Strawberry Matcha Latte. SERIES A COFFEE may have “coffee” in their name, but their matcha is also delicious. The matcha in this latte took the spotlight; it was bright, earthy, and robust, adding creaminess and sweetness without a grassy aftertaste. The strawberry pureé was a standout for me: it had a natural texture and a fresh, concentrated strawberry flavor.
One thing I’ve noticed about SERIES A’s drinks—both their espresso-based and matcha lattes—is that they tend to be stronger than those at other cafés. This isn’t a bad thing; in fact, the higher concentration allows the espresso and matcha flavors to shine through in their drinks. However, if you have a lower caffeine tolerance, it’s something to keep in mind.
The Study Space
Beyond its delicious drinks, SERIES A COFFEE offers a fantastic study environment and cute interior. The space is bright and modern, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light. There is plenty of greenery and other decorations throughout the café as well. There’s free WiFi and plenty of outlets indoors. There are also a variety of seating options, including booths, a taller table, and couches. They even have a TV for playing Switch games if you want to take a break from studying.
Overall, I highly recommend visiting SERIES A COFFEE. Whether you’re looking for a unique, Asian-inspired drink, a cozy study spot, or both, this café has something special to offer!
