3 Best Hidden Restaurants in Cypress, CA

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UC Berkeley chapter.

Ah, Cypress — my beloved hometown ever since preschool. During my residency in this small suburban town for the past 16 years, I’ve accumulated some of my favorite eats. Here’s a list of all of the yummy hidden gems nestled in this quiet and sleepy Southern Californian city.

1. Sandwich House

Sandwich House is a cozy and homey mom-and-pop shop serving Vietnamese cuisine. It’s located right across from Cypress College, conveniently making it a favorite stop for hungry college students. My favorite item on their menu is #1, the Sandwich House Special. Layers of pork meat loaf, sliced cucumber, jalapeños, cilantro, pickled carrots, daikon radish, jambon, onion, and pâté (ground pork liver) are stuffed between two halves of freshly baked french bread spread with mayonnaise. This invigorating combination of flavors and textures altogether translate into a tantalizingly tasty sandwich, making the last savory morsel oh, so precious and painful to eat. The best part is that the sandwich comes with unlimited iced jasmine tea, as well as free dessert — all for only $5!

2. Poki Bomb

Poki Bomb is a new establishment that has recently opened in Cypress, but it’s already attracting a massive amount of attention. Not only is the fish extremely fresh, but the service is exceptional — you’ll definitely be leaving with a happy stomach and a smile on your face.

#SpoonTip: Ask for the Triple Bomb sauce for your bowl and you won’t regret it!

3. Albertaco’s Mexican Food

Hands down — when you’re in Cypress, Albertaco’s is a must.  This dinky eatery evokes an appealing sense of nostalgia, perhaps because of its many years of business. It’s also well-known among SoCal residents as the place to go for bomb carne asada fries. It’s open until 1 AM, so Albertaco’s is the perfect spot to grub with friends late at night or go for a drive-thru run when you’re craving Mexican food. It’s the ultimate place to head to for dank, greasy, and fatty fries — a once in a while treat.

While Cypress, CA isn’t a big flashing city by any means, it still offers a variety of quality food that can’t be found anywhere else. Next time you’re in the area, be sure to try out one of these places!
