Where You Can Get Fresh Fruit at Berkeley

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UC Berkeley chapter.

Regardless of where you are, apples and bananas are the staple fruits for most college students, and nothing — nothing — is worse than eating the same thing over and over again.

To help you avoid the same problems we encountered, here’s what Spoon learned so far about eating healthy and eating happy at Berkeley.

Top 2 Spots to Find Fruit:

1. The Golden Bear Cafe is definitely the best on-campus location to find fruit. Inside the Cafe, there are ready-to-eat pineapples, watermelons, melons and fruit cups. Outside at the fruit stand, you’ll find mangoes, avocados, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and grapes. While options are plenty, the prices may stretch your meal points (or wallets) thin.

2. Trader Joe’s is another great option. Compared to GBC’s prices, Trader Joe’s prices are much more reasonable. Plus, Trader Joe’s has an even wider variety of fruits, including peaches, oranges, tomatoes, cherries and more.

Tips on how to Enjoy Your Fresh Food:

It’s not a bad idea to stock up on fruit once or twice a week and prep them when you have time. If you wash and portion all the fruit, you can easily grab some to bring to campus as a healthy snack.

However, keeping all your fruit fresh may be a problem. Purchasing produce at GBC or Trader Joe’s usually means that we buy way more than we can finish before it goes bad.

1. Keep in mind that some fruits stay fresh longer than others. For example, pears and oranges generally last longer, so they can be kept until the end of the week, while berries will need to be finished first.

2. Freezing fruit is also a great way to preserve your fruit. Frozen fruit tastes amazing, and it’s a much healthier substitute for ice cream or even fro-yo. Our personal favorites are frozen grapes and strawberries.

3. Spoon has tons of fun recipes which you can use to efficiently and tastily use your fruit. These 27 Stone Fruit Recipes are just a few of Spoon‘s ideas to spice up your fruits. You can also make Easy Fruit Desserts on the Grill or Homemade Fruit By the Fruit.

Avoid falling into a rut by using these tips to up your fruit game. An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but just apples and bananas everyday will definitely keep you away from fruit. Choose wisely and enjoy daily.
