Think Outside the Box at Glassbox Coffee

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Mich chapter.

If you’re  anything like me, you know that caffeine is an essential aspect of the college routine. Looking to change up your daily trip to Starbucks or Espresso and go local? Introducing, Glassbox.

Located on the corner of South University and Washtenaw, Glassbox can be easy to miss. The unique atmosphere and handcrafted beverages at this coffee house, however, make walking a little further down South U worth the trip.

Glassbox’s menu isn’t too extensive – appealing mostly to dedicated coffee-drinkers. If you’re an espresso lover, the cappuccino or latte is the way to go. Made fresh, your drink will be brought out to your table quickly in a big, ceramic cup. Not only do the friendly baristas create the ever-popular, always-on-Pinterest “leaf” design with your foam, but the quality of the drinks surpass any chain coffee shop’s version.

But if coffee isn’t for you, don’t fret: the juices that Glassbox offers are also fresh and well prepared. If you’re feeling a little extra hipster, go for the KGB: kale, ginger, basil, pineapple, and cantaloupe. Or, if you just want a refreshing blend of fruits, try the combination of orange, strawberry, and banana.

Warning: Glassbox is pretty small – with only four tables and a bar with a few stools. Linger and wait for an open seat if you can, but if not, grab your coffee or juice to go. Your beverage might be somewhat of a splurge (think $5 juice or $4 latte), but the quality at Glassbox is definitely worth the occasional visit.
