Ann Arbor has a way of keeping up with the latest trends in the culinary world, and lately, it seems like an egg is being added to just about anything, from mac and cheese to Caesar salad. Sounds a little indulgent, and that’s because it is. While this versatile ingredient can certainly hold its own, there’s no denying that the addition of a fried egg can take any dish to the next level.
1. Farm Egg Pizza – Bigalora
This pie is fired at 900 degrees Fahrenheit, covered with roasted zucchini, creamy ricotta, and topped with a perfectly crispy egg. The only shameful thing about it is that there isn’t an egg on every slice (and trust me, you’ll fight for it).
2. Patatas Bravas – Aventura
Aventura has a way of putting a trendy flare on classic Catalan dishes, and we’re not complaining. One would think that the combination of thrice fried potatoes smothered in spicy aioli couldn’t be topped–but it can, quite literally, with a fried egg.
3. Shrimp and Grits – Savas
A modern spin on a southern classic: jalapeño cheddar grits, sautéed gulf shrimp, braised kale, and, of course, a fried egg.
4. Mac and Eggs – Zingerman’s Roadhouse
“She is beauty, she is grace.” Zingerman’s Roadhouse is famed for their wide variety of Mac and Cheese, but this version, complete with two fried eggs, green onions, and bacon bits, definitely takes the cake.
5. The Hot Mess – Juicy Kitchen
Perhaps not the most aesthetically pleasing, but who’s counting when it tastes this good? Hearty multigrain toast, goat cheese, red peppers, smashed avocado, Sriracha, and a perfectly cooked egg over medium. My prayers have been answered.
6. Chilaquiles Verde – Isalita
Nachos just got a whole lot better. This Mexican classic comes complete with tortilla chips, black beans, fresh crema, onions, and a fried egg to top it all off. (Pro tip – You can order an extra egg, if you want)
7. Bibimbap – Tomukun
It’s impossible to deny the sheer beauty that is this Korean classic, and Tomukun has it down to a science.
8. Caesar Salad – Mani
A different kind of a fried egg, but no discrimination here! This classic Caesar salad is topped with a soft-boiled egg deep fried in breadcrumbs, and it’s nothing short of fabulous.
9. Chorizo Frita *Make it Loco* – Frita Batidos
If looks could kill…The list wouldn’t be complete without this Ann Arbor staple–a Cuban style Chorizo burger topped with all of the good stuff (guac, slaw, salsa, cheese, EGG), and it tastes just as good as it looks.
To anyone who thought eggs were only for breakfast, it’s time to reconsider.
