Why I Prefer Starbucks Over Dunkin’ Donuts as a New Englander

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Mass Boston chapter.

I have one burning question, that I need to get out of my head. Is it really appropriate for me, as a New Englander, to prefer Starbucks over Dunkin Donuts? *quietly thinks to self* Hmmmm……….

Whenever I mention that I love Starbucks or that I’m going to drive the extra mile or two for them, people look at me like I have two heads. I honestly don’t see what’s the big deal.

These are the reactions I always get from people: But, why? Don’t you know that America runs on Dunkin’? You are from Bahs-ton. Why are you going to buy overly priced coffee? That’s crazy.

Me: Ok *waiting patiently but annoyed AF*

Well, yeah but I do prefer Starbucks over Dunkin’ Donuts any day! Why do you ask? Well, I got several reasons why to back up my claim.

1. Have you seen this year’s holiday cups?

It’s so cute, yet simple and engaging. Every year, Starbucks creates a new holiday cup and this year’s coffee cup was purposely created for us to add and show our creative side. Perhaps, add some color or write something close to your heart. Who doesn’t love personalization?

2. Their drinks, duh!

Starbucks offers so many beverages to choose from. They have lattes, teas, cappuccinos, frappuccinos, smoothies, etc. It’s always hard for me to choose. But, my forever go-to drink is the Venti Soy Green Tea Latte. The color is so rich, yet the taste is so addicting and delicious. Plus, when I’m drinking it, it makes me feel healthy AF

3. Starbucks offers dairy and non-dairy milk.

Thank you, Starbucks, for giving everyone options to choose from such as: whole milk, 2% milk, non-fat milk, cream, soy milk, almond milk and coconut milk in our drinks. The options are endless!

4. Their coffee beans.

Starbucks gives us options to choose from, such as: blonde roast, medium roast or dark roast (which I love). So whether you prefer a lighter cup of coffee, Starbucks has your back.

5. Starbucks keeps it creative.

I really enjoy how Starbucks comes out with new beverages every year. It’s like a challenge for me to come back to try their new drink. This year’s holiday drink is the Toasted White Chocolate Mocha and OMG it’s delicious.

Me: Did someone say new drink?

6. Convenience on campus. In a rush? Say no more.

Thankfully to UMass, we have the convenience to get Starbucks on campus. So, if you take night classes or are in a rush to get to class and know your professor is going to bore you to death, you know at least, UMass has your back. You can find Starbucks in the following locations: McCormack, Healey Library, and ISC building.

7. Rather be extra and spend $$.

I know Starbucks is a tad bit more pricey than Dunkin’ Donuts, but I rather pay a couple more dollars when I am being served great quality. Plus, their cups are so Instagram-worthy!

8. Free drink on our birthdays.

Yes, you read that right. Starbucks treats us to a free drink or treat on our birthday! I know when it’s my birthday, I am definitely extra, and order a Venti-sized drink and walk out of Starbucks feeling like a million bucks.

So to answer your question, I do prefer Starbucks over Dunkin’ Donuts as a New Englander. Although, I have to give credits to Dunkin’ Donuts for their donuts. I do wish Starbucks offered that. (hint hint).

But, we surely will have some serious competition on campus next semester. Dunkin’ Donuts will be opening next year on Campus Center – UL. So tell me, are you #TeamStarbucks or #TeamDunkin and why?
