Why You Seriously Need to Stop Snapchatting Your Food

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Conn chapter.

There are certain people who believe Snapchat is a competition to see how long they can make their story. One way they (you know, the people that believe that’s how the app works) achieve this unnecessarily long Snapchat story is by putting up every plate of every meal of the day. On behalf of all those who are absolutely done with this nonsense, please stop.

There is nothing worse than having to go through those snaps of Tupperware filled with pineapples, your morning coffee, or the pizza you bought. Frankly, I don’t care. I don’t need to see what you plan to eat 24/7. It’s not entertaining. It’s just food.

Now, yes, food is a delicious blessing we are so lucky to have, but that’s not a green light for you to remind us of this obvious fact 20 times a day.

There are those of you I see eating a salad today. Congratulations. It’s the same thing you ate yesterday because you have to make sure everyone knows you’re trying out this “healthy eating” thing. Listen, that’s great and all, but I don’t need a daily reminder. Trust me, once is enough.

Maybe you’ve got the munchies after studying for 13 hours straight. Nice job staying dedicated to your work (which is clearly shown through the other selfies you posted during this 13-hour block), but remember, a snack is a snack. It’s not another reason to procrastinate some more by telling me what you’re going to eat. I realized this was a habit of yours when you did this last week, several times…

Maybe you’ve managed to microwave your left-over Chinese food for dinner. Wow. You were able to waste my time by showing me microwaving is yet another way of preparing food. It’s not like I didn’t see you do this with lunch today, or yesterday, or the day before that. Incredible. Teach me your ways.

As with any rule, this annoyance comes with exceptions:

  1. If you post food every once in a while, maybe once every two weeks, I can live with that.
  2. If you went out to dinner, and you think the presentation of your meal is exquisite, definitely post that, because I’ll probably think it looks just as cool.
  3. Chefs doing cool cooking tricks are always acceptable.

But if I see another snap of your seventh meal of the day for the fifth time that week, we’re going to have a problem.

Food is an essential part of life (and one of the best parts of it too), but it shouldn’t be the only thing on your story. If I want to see pictures of food, frankly, I’d want quality ones, and I’d go on Spoon University for that.

So the next time you’re about to post a picture of that pizza you ordered at 3 am, ask yourself: How many food-related snaps have I put up in the past twenty-four hours? If the answer is at least three, hit the X on the left hand corner.

I am a creative writer that enjoys food a little too much. Writing is my passion, and it's incredible, especially with chips and dip on the side.
