UT’s Food Lab Challenge Offers a Chance to Win $30,000 in Prizes

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Texas chapter.

Interested in food? Interested in winning money? Thought so. The University of Texas Food Lab has announced its inaugural Food Lab Challenge, a competition that will encourage innovation in food agriculture, distribution, packaging and consumption. This contest will award $30,000 in prizes! (I knew that would get your attention.)

The Food Lab is looking for teams of four to five members to contribute ideas, business plans and supporting materials that will impact and improve how the food supply chain functions. Ideas should be innovative and have the potential to make a global impact in one of these categories:

  1. Inputs and Production
  2. Processing, Packaging and Safety
  3. Storage and Distribution
  4. Healthy Eating and Food Education

The winner of each category will receive $5,000 and also be eligible for the grand prize of $10,000. Imagine how many food trucks you could hit up with that dough. (Torchy’s is calling your name.)

This contest is open to anyone and everyone from undergraduate freshmen to established entrepreneurs. Registration opened on June 1, 2014 and is open until September 30, 2014. All business plans are also due on this day. Finalists will be chosen and paired with mentors on November 1, and on February 14, 2015 (Valentine’s Day), winning teams will be announced. Nothing says “love” quite like a $10,000 check. Am I right?
