According to scientists, sugar may be eight times more addictive than cocaine. Like cocaine, it triggers a flood of dopamine to the brain, making you feel immediate pleasure. However, the sugar high is short-lived, and the brain craves more. If these pathways in the brain are repeatedly stimulated, the brain will need more and more sugar to achieve the same feeling of euphoria.

The American Heart Association recommends that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons and men no more than 8 teaspoons of added sugar per day. To put that in perspective, a 12 oz. Coke contains 9.3 teaspoons of sugar. Yikes.
