The 8 Best Taco Places in Austin

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Texas chapter.

What’s the best thing to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner? One word: tacos. With different meats, veggies, cheeses, and sauces packed into a corn or flour tortilla, tacos are sure to make your day just a little bit brighter. Austin certainly isn’t lacking in taco joints — it’s even rumored to be home of the breakfast taco. With so many to choose from, we’ve helped ya out with a list of the top 8 taco places in Austin.

1. Taco Deli

Don’t let the line out the door scare you away, because these tacos are worth the wait. With an extensive breakfast and lunch taco menu, you’re sure to find one you love. If you can’t decide, try the Taco of the Day or the Taco of the Month to help you along in the ordering process. Make sure to add the Doña salsa, but use a light hand because it packs some real heat.

2. Taco Joint

This hole-in-the-wall is a great place to go pick up some authentic, inexpensive tacos with friends that will be ready by the time you finish ordering. Taco Joint specializes in simple, but delicious breakfast tacos — my favorite is the potato, egg, and cheese with the spicy avocado sauce.

3. Texas Honey Ham

“We want to make your day a little better. Come eat.” This is the motto that attracts all the hungry customers to this local Austin restaurant. Even with other breakfast options like the famous Breakfast Roll, tacos are still their best seller. Texas Honey Ham has an incredible meat selection, so treat yourself and add some brisket to your tacos.

4. Taco Shack

Taco Shack has a cute atmosphere and is a great place to eat some grub that comes out fast and hot. You can build your own taco or choose one from their list of Shack Favorites — either way, you’re guaranteed a damn good taco.

5. Torchy’s

These days, it’s hard not to see politics everywhere — it’s even made its way into local taco joints. At Torchy’s, you can order “The Democrat” (shredded beef barbacoa topped with fresh avocado, queso fresco, cilantro, onions and a wedge of lime) or “The Republican (grilled jalapeño sausage, shredded cheese & pico de gallo) that might help you decide which way to vote come the next election.

#SpoonTip: You can make a taco “trashy” by adding queso to your taco. You’re welcome.

6. Fuzzy‘s

Fuzzy’s is a great place to go for dinner to get some tacos and drinks. With huge portions, this is a place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a fun time with friends. The shrimp taco is one of the newest items they’ve added to the menu with lettuce, guacamole, tomato and feta.

#SpoonTip: Fuzzy’s does $1 margs on Thursdays, so be sure to get one (or two) with your taco.

7. Mighty Bird

Ever craving some phenomenal chicken? The Mighty Bird, a local Austin restaurant, guarantees fresh homemade tortillas served with their famous chicken — don’t forget a drizzle of their homemade salsas that are great with any taco. The warm atmosphere and comfort food will leave you full and smiling.

8. Pueblo Viejo

This amazing food truck has savory tacos for all meals. For lunch, you could try the Guaca Taco that’s topped with guacamole, fresh spinach and your choice of meat. None of their tacos cost over $3, so even broke college students can afford to feast on this delicious selection of tacos.

Tacos will satisfy any craving you have at any time of the day. These taco places have a wide variety of choices and come at a great price so you don’t have to wait till Taco Tuesday to get some quality tacos. Keep calm and taco on.

Nothing I love more than a good nap, good friends, a good show, and even better food!
