7 Ways to Make Your Healthy Snacks Taste Better

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Texas chapter.

I think I speak for all those leading a healthy lifestyle when I say that if I read one more Pinterest article suggesting healthy snacks of carrots and hummus, plain popcorn, a piece of fruit or * insert vegetable name here * I might just go crazy. Maybe. Probably. Definitely.

Personally, I need a little variety in my day-to-day routine. So if you are like me, and want to change up the routine and add some zing to your healthy snacking experience, try out these new ideas.

Triscuits and Cream Cheese

This combo never gets tiresome because you can always change it up. Eat it as is, add a slice of tomato and fresh basil for a light take on bruschetta or add a dollop of nutella for a light, creamy treat.

Cantaloupe and Prosciutto

The Italians have this combination right. The natural sweetness of the fruit paired with the saltiness of the prosciutto make this the perfect afternoon snack.

Homemade Nut Butter

When you make nut butter at home, you leave the harmful chemicals and nonsense fillers at the grocery store and are able to make a delicious snack tailored to your exact preferences. My personal favorite is roasted almond butter with vanilla and brown sugar. Can you say decadent?

Frozen Peas

This may sound a little odd, but I promise this will be your new favorite snack. The peas have a slight natural sweetness and a nice, crunchy snap. The only problem you may have is that the peas might thaw before you are done with the bag. But hey, not a bad problem for such a healthy snack.

Cottage Cheese (with toppings if you aren’t sold on the cottage cheese flavor)

This often overlooked snack packs a healthy dose of protein at a low calorie cost and can be jazzed up if you want a different flavor. How about this delicious combination of cottage cheese on a slice of toast with a drizzle of honey? YUM.

Edamame

Have them covered in rich dark chocolate from Trader Joe’s or have them baked with parmesan for an alternative to your bland popcorn. Either way, edamame are a delicious, cheap and healthy snack alternative.

Cheddar Cheese Slices and Apples

Forget the apple and peanut butter or nutella combo and go for this classic that satisfies your salty and sweet craving in one delicious bite. Tip: do yourself a favor by going for the real stuff. You are doing yourself no favors by going for that imitation, low calorie stuff.

Try out these snacks if you are in a rut with your healthy snacking routine, and you’ll be inspired to keep up the hardwork.
