15 Drinks Every College Student Needs to Try Before They Graduate

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at STFX chapter.

University, while being the first step into adulthood, is the time of your life. Even with all of the exams, labs and essays, it is imperative that we as students enjoy our time here at college and indulge ourselves to be crazy every now and then.

If you are having trouble finding a drink that is just right for you, or getting bored of the same old taste, look no further. Try a drink from this list of 15 next time you find yourself enjoying a night out.

1. Tequila Shot

From my own personal experiences, I believe that when translated from Spanish, tequila actually means “What did I do last night?” Surprisingly, tequila boasts several healthy benefits. The tequila shot is definitely a fan favourite and one that you can absolutely not miss out on while attending university.

2. Jäger Bomb

What makes the Jäger bomb so special? The use of both red bull and Jäger provide you with a different kind of buzz, one that gets you very energetic, active and drunk. What is not to love about that? Plus, they are also very fun to do.

3. Whiskey Sour

Before attending university, I had no idea what a whiskey sour was, but I am glad I found out. Whether you get this one as a single or double, it will always be sour. However, this sipping drink should not be underestimated, as too many of these will land you with a wicked hangover.

4. Rum & Coke

A bar classic. With an easy mix of just rum and coke, this is definitely one of the most popular drinks to order at the bar. Being at Saint Francis Xavier University for two years, I have learned the efficiency of ordering two singles or a double… or two doubles at a time.

5. Vodka-Water-Mio

Also known as “the healthy alternative,” vodka-water-mio promises you the same buzz that anything else can give you. What makes this drink so special is that you will likely avoid a terrible hangover (and hate yourself a little less) by drinking water as you get drunk.

6. 151 Rum

…Pineapple juice and Malibu. I am not sure why, because this is not exactly the easiest sipping alcohol, but this is a big favourite for most college students. If you are feeling slightly daring and adventurous, give it a try. But be careful, 151 rum packs a punch.

7. Pornstar Shot

After trying one of these, your favourite pornstar will no longer be a person, but a shot instead. The pornstar shot literally tastes like candy and is a favourite amongst the ladies.

8. Jungle Juice

If you are ever organizing a party with your friends, be sure to add jungle juice to the mix of drinks provided. It (surprisingly) tastes very good and is an absolute must before you graduate. To make things easier, always ask each person who arrives to bring some alcohol and a piece of fruit to add to the bucket.

9. Porch Crawler

A question that may come to your mind when someone makes porch crawler is: why? This strange mix of beer, vodka and frozen lemonade is actually not as bad as it sounds. Although it is a little less sophisticated, as evident from its name, it is easy to make and always fun to have at parties.

10. Fireball

If you like the taste of Cinnamon Hearts or Hot Tamales, you will love the taste of Fireball. This alcohol is still fairly strong, holding an alcohol percentage of 33 percent, but it is so good that you will not need any mixer or a chaser.

11. Molson Canadian Cold Shots

Given our low standards as students, Molson Canadian Cold Shots are an ideal beer of choice for most people attending school at a Canadian university. What is not to love about this drink? It’s friendly on the bank account and 6% alcohol. These brewskies come in a pack of eight and are best served cold.

12. Twisted Teas

Twisted Teas are the perfect drink for those who do not like the taste of alcohol (considering that they taste just like iced tea). But there is a reason why their slogan is “be a little twisted” — these teas taste so good that you will actually forget how quickly you drink them. Before you know it, you will be done with eight of them within the hour.

13. Smirnoff Ice

If you have never been iced before, you are missing out. Smirnoff Ice is one of the most refreshing drinks you can buy. Its “delightfully crisp, citrus taste” will have you coming back for more. Also great for a classic “icing” of a friend.

14. Black Fly

No matter where I go during a night out, there will always be at least one person grasping a pack of Black Flys. They are not expensive, they taste great, and they definitely do the trick of getting you ready for a night out.

15. Wine

The best part about wine is that there are countless types to choose from. Given my own personal experiences, there is never a bad time for wine. Whether you are drinking it before a night out on the town, while you study, with a meal, or if you’re having a bad day, give this a try before you graduate. Wine not?

Bottoms up, enjoy, and most importantly, drink safe.
