How to Get Creative with the Late-Night Foods at Lakeside Dining Hall

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Stanford chapter.

How do I begin to introduce the phenomenon that is Late Night? I guess you could call it a culinary oasis for nocturnal Stanford students. From 9:30 pm to 2:30 am, you can use those handy meal plan dollars on some of the unhealthiest but most deliciously satisfying dishes on campus.

Apart from the typical mozzarella sticks and chocolate milkshakes, here are some great off-the-menu combos:

1. Mixing milkshake flavors

Single flavored milkshakes are too mainstream. Plain vanilla? You’re at Late Night. Be bold. Add more dimension to this frozen staple by asking for virtually any combination of milkshake ingredients.

Try a sweet banana-peanut-butter-vanilla or a deadly chocolate-mocha-oreo combo. Also, take a look at the sundae toppings, chances are you can ask to have those added too. How does a mint chocolate chip milkshake with oreo and brownie bits sound? That’s what I thought.

2. Fried rice with sauces

Everyone knows that Lag Late Night has the best Asian bowls for your indulgent and greasy cravings. But did you that know you can make your yummy rice bowl even more personalized? Ask for teriyaki or BBQ hoisin sauce in your fried rice. It adds a depth and richness of flavor that you wouldn’t get simply having sauce poured over top.

3. Chicken tenders with cheese and bacon

If you’re bored with the same old chicken tenders, try asking for added melted cheese and bacon bits for a late night version of chicken cordon bleu (okay, I know this is a stretch, but it’s seriously so good). For an even more intense flavor, swap the plain chicken tenders for chicken strips of fire. But seriously, always remember to…

4. California burrito

The Cali burrito is an experience like no other. It combines my two favorite late night dishes: the burrito and FRIES. Simply ask to substitute fries for eggs in the breakfast burrito (garlic fries are especially yummy). However, stay away from less crispy fries like waffle and wedges because they just get soggy. No one wants a soggy burrito.

5. Back door

Not really a food hack, but few people know that they’re a way to exit the food service area without going all the way back around the front. To the left of the grill, there’s a door that leads straight to the Lag courtyard. Good for a quick escape back to your bed to fall into your food coma.
