It’s no secret that the food options on campus are limited, especially on the weekends. If you have a meal plan, the weekend omelettes and tater tots are always something to look forward to. For those of us who are without a meal plan, cold pizza gets a little bit old. In an effort to bring a greater amount of accessible resources to campus, Student Life and the Campus Activities Board teamed up to put on the first Saturday StrEATs event, which gave all students, staff, faculty, and visitors the opportunity to buy lunch from local food trucks. (Yes, you read that right — real life food trucks came on a weekend.)
We got to ditch the leftovers and have actual hot food available right in our backyard. The food trucks parked in the Dante Quad, allowing the Saint Mary’s community to enjoy fusion foods from Turnt Up Tacos and Tortas and indulge in IzzyA’s Frozen Custard.
To make the event even sweeter, Student Life was giving out $5 vouchers to the first 40 students who downloaded the SMC Guides app. Plus, SMC Sustainability was offering warm clothes from the Free Store, which gave everyone the chance to get their wardrobe ready for ~fall~.
The mango sorbet from IzzyA’s was as beautiful as it was delicious. And, it was free if you had a voucher.
One of the most popular items ordered was the Taco Sampler from the Turnt Up truck, which included three tacos — one beef, one chicken, and one pork — and a drink.
If you missed the first Saturday StrEATs, don’t worry. The next one will take place on Nov. 19 and will be featuring foods from Grab & Go Kabob and Tonli Dumpling House. Come anytime from 12-3, and be ready to StrEAT.
