The Cafe You Never Knew Existed In The Square

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at St Andrews chapter.

Looking for a new place to eat in St Andrews? Have you ever heard of Cafe in the Square? Not many people have, as it’s tucked away in a little alcove in between the Doll’s House and the St Andrews Library (not the one you’ve spent all week revising in – the town’s library). The Cafe was previously an old pottery shop and many decorative details have remained in place, making it one of the loveliest places in town. Not only is it easy on the eyes, but they have some fantastic food as well. To make it even easier for you to enjoy I’ve compiled a list of the top 5 things to order.

1. Fresh Soup

In order to stay sane in this frigid Scottish winter, we appreciate now more than ever a warm bowl of soup. Freshly made every morning, the soup at The Cafe must have a special ingredient in it because it is mind-blowingly amazing every day. Flavors range from Cream of Mushroom to Lentil and Bacon, and it only costs £2 to take away. Sitting in, the large soup and two pieces of bread costs a total of £3.25, which is definitely a steal in this pricey town.

2. Homemade Sandwich or Baguette

The Cafe has loads of different sandwich options to choose from, including a classic Free Range Egg Mayo and a homemade Coronation Chicken. Sandwiches come on white or whole meal bread, but fresh baguettes (completely homemade) are also an option on the menu. The best sandwiches to try are the Mature Cheddar and Tomato Chutney, Ham and Philadelphia or a classic Chicken Salad. All sandwiches and baguettes come with homemade coleslaw and a side salad, which just add to the yum-factor and make you feel good for eating something green.

3. Salad

If you’re searching for something a bit lighter, there are also a few salads on the menu including a Honey Mustard Chicken Salad and a Goat’s Cheese Salad, served with beetroot chutney, drizzled with balsamic glaze. Deliciously healthy, they’ll have you leaving with a satisfied smile.

4. Scones

My personal favorite item on the menu, the fresh scones, are prepared and baked every morning. They come with butter and jam (the raspberry jam is homemade of course), and I’m pretty sure it’s the best jam in St Andrews. There are other treats for sale as well, including Carrot Cake, Victoria Sponge Cake and Apple Crumble. To keep you feeling toasty and your sweet tooth happy, add a hot chocolate to your order for extra deliciousness. You deserve it.

5. Coffee

Cafe in the Square receives coffee beans from Matthew Algie, a coffee company based in Glasgow. Rumour has it that Taste gets its coffee from here as well, for all you coffee elitists who claim Taste is the best in town. The Cafe has a bit more room for you to sit down and enjoy your coffee, a stress-free alternative to the forever crowded Taste.

So broaden your horizons a bit and head over to the Cafe in the Square for delicious soup, fresh scones and lovely service. Open from 11 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.
