As summer approaches its hottest weeks, an influx of tourists rush to New England in effort to escape the heat and enjoy the many outdoor attractions offered in some America’s cooler states. Maine, in particular, draws a huge crowd, as it is known for its incredible hikes, breathtaking views, and deliciously fresh lobster.
It’s easy to get caught up in the novelty of the quintessential Maine visit, and make the mistake of only trying the traditional boiled lobster. Although this delicacy is quite good, there are so many alternatives that will make your taste buds beyond happy. From lobster quiche for the less adventurous, to lobster ice cream for the more daring, Maine really offers it all. However, the variety of lobster sandwiches takes the cake for the best way to try some lobster. The options are almost limitless, and they never disappoint, but tracking down every incredible lobster sandwich would be impossible.
Here are our top 3–if you see them on a menu, we highly recommend you go for it.
1. Lobster Grilled Cheese
We all know and love the childhood sandwich classic: grilled cheese. However, this favorite can be easily upgraded with lobster and a few slices of tomato melted between the layers of bread and cheese.
2. Lobster BLAT
There’s no denying that BLT’s will always hold a special place in our hearts, but the addition of some avocado and fresh lobster make the already incredible sandwich to die for.
3. Lobster Roll
Sweet, simple and always delicious. We recommend trying Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine Lobster Roll in Freeport, Maine (right next to the giant L.L. Bean boot).
So before you choose the traditional boiled lobster, take a look at the menu and consider your other options. Most restaurants have a few ways for you to mix things up, but still enjoy the essential experience of a fresh Maine lobster.
