Get Caffeine Not the Calories

As someone who has the worst track record for falling asleep while studying, I am constantly making trips to Starbucks for a caffeine buzz. While this effectively keeps me awake, it fails to keep me within my daily calorie intake. It has always been a struggler of getting the caffeine not the calories. However, after trying some delicious and some unconventional options, I have finally compiled a list of low-calorie pickups. 

1. Starbucks

The easiest way to cut down on calories on your favorite Starbucks order is to order it with almond, coconut or nonfat milk. For instance, a tall iced Latte made with whole milk can be cut down from 120 to 50 calories by ordering it with almond milk instead. If you have a sweet-tooth, go for the sugar free syrups which will satisfy your craving without any additional calories. Another easy tip: skip the whip! The Nitro Cold Brew with Sweet Cream will give you the most punch for the least amount of calories and still taste amazing. A tall only has 70 calories with 230 milligrams of caffeine. 

2. Sugar-Free Red Bull

If you are looking for a kick of energy, then Sugar Free Red Bull is the way to go. The sugar-free version is only 10 calories, which is a hundred less than the original; however, it has the same flavor and definitely will help you pull an all-nighter. A regular 8.4 oz can has 80 milligrams of caffeine. 

3. Monster Energy

For those who do not like fizzy drinks, Monster Rehab is an amazing alternative. The Monster Rehab Tea and Pink Lemonade tastes exactly like an Arnold Palmer, but gives you a great energy boost. Each can has about 155 milligrams of caffeine in it. 

4. Caffeinated Gum

When I was waiting in line at 7/11, I was surprised to come across this gum hidden among all the candy by the cash register. This gum is perfect if you are bored and need something to do while working. Each piece has 40 milligrams of caffeine. While the gum loses its flavor very fast, it still gives a great caffeine buzz.

5. Caffeinated Dietary Supplement

Another way to get caffeine, if you are not in the mood to drink anything is the dietary supplements called Energy + Focus from Zhou Energy. It combines 100 milligrams of caffeine with 200 milligrams l-theanine. The l-theanine is supposed to counteract caffeine crashes and jitters. If you struggle with terrible crashes of energy after a cup of coffee, this could be a perfect fit for you. The company suggests not to take more than four capsules a day.

 Avoid those extra calories, and get those extra hours of studying in. However, get caffeine with discretion. An average adult should only consume 400 milligrams of caffeine in one day.  With all these options, be sure to ace your exams this semester and get the caffeine not the calories.
