Mardi Gras in St. Louis is notorious for an over-the-top and rowdy celebration and as a Saint Louis University student, I can definitely attest to that. Some even say that St. Louis is a respectable (minor) alternative bash to the infamous New Orleans Mardi Gras festivities.
Mardi Gras is known for being the day before Lent, or “Fat Tuesday.” This is a day for indulging yourself before ridding yourself of whatever you decide to give up for Lent — basically just an excuse to stuff your face with any treat you can get your hands on.
Those who are new to the St. Louis area may have never even heard of celebrating this outlandish holiday over the span of a weekend in a city other than New Orleans. For anybody looking to have a successful (and outrageous) weekend, here are some of the cannot-miss events and places to celebrate Mardi Gras in St. Louis.
Boogaloo Cajun Food
This authentic Cajun restaurant goes all out for a Mardi Gras celebration that will make you feel like you’re in southern Louisiana. On Friday and Tuesday, Boogaloo adds some spice to their menu for a Mardi Gras you won’t forget
Mayor’s Mardi Gras Ball
For those of us who have some money to spare (so not many of us), the Mayor’s Mardi Gras Ball is the place to go on Friday, February 24th this year. This is your chance to break out your old prom dress, get dolled up, and go have some fun before the Saturday festivities. The cost to get in? $150. The cost for a night of fun? Priceless.
Highway 61 Roadhouse
Who wouldn’t want to be a part of something with a name like “Pardi Gras?” On Friday, they are selling $5 hurricanes, which you can enjoy while listening to some live music. The party continues on Saturday morning as they start a breakfast buffet before the parade. From there, they’ll even shuttle you over to the parade — not a bad set up.
Soulard Mardi Gras Parade
This is probably the most well-known place to celebrate for Mardi Gras weekend. It takes place all day Saturday, February 25th. The parade begins near Busch Stadium, going downtown, and coming to an end in Soulard. There are some crazy floats and lots of beads flying around. Be sure to dress to impress in purple, green, and gold.
Molly’s in Soulard
From 10:30 AM to 10:30 PM on Saturday, February 25th, Molly’s will be holding an exclusive event at their prime location in Soulard. With an open bar, a DJ, and endless buffets, what’s not to love? The price is a little steep ($75-95), but some might say it’s worth it to have a little less crowds and a little more party.
So where will you be spending your Mardi Gras this year? It may prove to be a little more expensive than you’d hoped. But it’s worth it for a good time, right? However you choose to spend Fat Tuesday this year, laissez les bon temps roule (let the good times roll)!
