4 Reasons Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Are the Ultimate Sick Day Food

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Sewanee chapter.

Since cold weather has made an appearance, I know multiple people who have been sick, including myself. Since I was little, I can remember bad sick days where nothing sounded good to eat. My mom would ask me so many different options, but I wanted absolutely nothing. Of course, I couldn’t just not eat because then I would never get better. Grilled cheese became the ultimate remedy.

Since I eat grilled cheese every time I’m sick, I wanted to find out why I do so. A part of why I want grilled cheese when I’m sick can actually be explained through science. As said in Time, “Researchers suggest that when we associate foods with happy memories, the effects are profound, impacting how good we think foods taste as well as how good those foods make us feel.” When I’m sick, a grilled cheese makes me feel a little bit better, so therefore that memory makes me want it.

Now, what’s so good about grilled cheese that makes me want to eat it? When thinking of this, I thought about certain components of a grilled cheese that make me like it.

1. It’s warm

What feels better when you have cold chills than a warm sandwich in your stomach? It’s like a blanket on your stomach that makes you feel warm inside.

2. It uses light Ingredients

Grilled cheese is a very simple and easy sandwich that doesn’t have much to it. The only ingredients needed are bread, butter, and cheese. If I ever feel nauseous and can’t handle a complex food, grilled cheese does the trick, as it’s easy on the stomach.

3. It’s versatile

Grilled cheese can be made in many different ways. Sometimes when I’m sick I get the weirdest cravings. Grilled cheese can be made so many different ways with different add ons—the options are unlimited.

4. It can be eaten with soup

Grilled cheese can be paired with any type of soup out there. It goes with tomato soup, potato soup, broccoli soup, and on and on. The pairing of the two are a gift to a sick person.

Whether you’re feeling gross or are just in the mood for some comfort food, the grilled cheese has got your back.

I spend most my days sleeping, eating, and playing volleyball! I am not the best cook out there, and I am hoping to change that. I absolutely love Memphis, my hometown, and Sewanee of course!
