Spudnik’s Potato Bowl Is the Comfort Food You Didn’t Know You Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at SCAD chapter.

It’s not every day you walk into a restaurant and are greeted by a robot. Well, Spudnik isn’t your typical restaurant. It’s taking all of your favorite comfort foods and putting them on top of a baked russet potato. Potato bowl—pure genius.

Andrew, a SCAD MFA Architecture alumni, and his friend were starving while they were working on Planet Fun, a local comic book/gamer store on Broughton. They found some potatoes, and hazaah: the idea of the potato bowl was born. Andrew believed in the idea so much that after he graduated from SCAD, he opened the restaurant in 2013, and SCAD students have been its biggest supporter since.

Spudnik’s menu is full of flavorful twists to your typical potato. From “The Classic,” a potato with cheese, chives, bacon, and sour cream, to “The Athenian,” a bowl with red peppers, hummus, olives, feta cheese, olive oil, and capers, there’s sure to be something to fit your potato needs.

If a russet potato isn’t in your future, try their delicious sweet potato bowls like “The Sugar Momma” covered in almonds, cinnamon, butter, and marshmallows. It’s a classic comfort food brought to you in a perfect little bowl.

Andrew was kind enough to make Mike (our photographer) and I “The Sunrise,” which consisted of a delicious potato bowl with bacon, chives, sour cream, and a fried egg. The bowl was finished quickly, and let us just say, the flavors of each element went perfectly with the rest. A delicious bowl of comfort with a full belly to show for it.

We can’t thank Andrew enough for showing us the magic behind the infamous potato bowl. Spudnik is open Sunday-Wednesday 12pm-8pm, and Thursday-Saturday 12pm-3:30am. It’s the perfect ending to a great day in downtown Savannah.
