The South is known for its signature cuisine with lots of bread, butter, and good, finger lickin’ meats. So, what happens when you place a juice bar on the busiest street in Savannah, GA? A delicious, environmentally-oriented restraint with a yoga studio upstairs that gives locals access to a new approach to food.
Beetnix is the clean eating option of Savannah, and it’s bringing its raw, vegan, and sustainable approach to food right to the heart of downtown.
Dancing Dogs Yoga was opened in 2014 by Shelley Lowther, who soon realized the need for a healthy, local option amidst the restaurants surrounding the studio. Focusing on locally-sourced produce and clean, simple recipes, Beetnix is now an essential for college students looking to keep happy through the quarter.
It’s located near Bull Street on Broughton, tucked between Civies, a retro/vintage consignment store and 24e, an eccentric home décor must-stop.
Beetnix is a raw, vegan establishment, so almost anyone can eat there no matter your allergies or dietary needs. Everything is made in house: the juices, the salads, even the desserts like raw oreos and pitaya cheesecake. Their biggest philosophy is helping the community and the environment, so at the small business, almost everything is locally sourced.
When Mike, Spoon SCAD’s amazing photographer, and I went to Beetnix, we were able to see how the juices that Beetnix presses were made. Beetnix presses local produce together to create rich juices full of flavor and health benefits. After the juice is pressed, the shavings from the fruits and veggies go to compost so that the cycle of local and well-sourced food continues on.
We saw the local favorite Beet It juice being pressed and watched apples, different types of beets, ginger, and other delicious produce turn into a rich, flavorful, healthy juice.
Beetnix offers juice cleanses too, so when eating junk during midterms and finals has gotcha feeling not-so-hot, their juice cleanses can help you get back on track and feeling beyond better.
We were also able to see the magic behind the Warrior 1, their most popular smoothie bowl. Packed with antioxidants and nutrients, the smoothie bowl fills you up and leaves you feeling great. You are able to choose between pitaya or açai as your base super fruit, and then more fruits are loaded into a blender and to transform into smooth, refreshing bowl of absolute delicious. It’s topped with hemp granola, cocoa nibs, bananas, strawberries, almond butter, and drizzled with honey.
Mike and I can both say that the smoothie bowl was delicious. Great texture with the smoothness of the blended fruits, crunch from the nibs and the granola, and fresh chewiness of the fruits. It was a great way to end a shoot.
We can’t thank Ellen and Shelley enough for letting us learn about and share the greatness that is Beetnix. They’re open 10 am to 7 pm every day, and you’ll never leave feeling anything but good.
