Although we say we’ll crawl out of bed early to get all our homework done and actually enjoy some daylight, the harsh reality is that most Sunday mornings begin with a raging hangover. Homework is simply out of the question because all we want is food. Now. And The Original Steve’s Diner is the place to go.
Steve’s is hidden in a small plaza on the side of the road, but don’t let the location deter you. Once you find the joint, be prepared to wait since Steve’s is very popular for breakfast and doesn’t take reservations (don’t let that deter you either, people are there for a reason). Arrive before 8am and you’ll be fine. But come 9am, there will be a line out the door until closing. Regardless, it’s totally worth the wait.
As a very small, ten-table, family owned restaurant, The Original Steve’s Diner has a homey feel and cozy atmosphere. When we arrived, the hostess made time to chat and say more than just “hello,” despite the line out the door. Once you are seated, the service remains excellent and the food is delivered to the table very promptly after you place your order.
The menu is kid-friendly and very entertaining. It refers to waffles as, “pancakes with syrup traps,” and french toast as, “freedom toast,” adding a casual humor that makes the customer feel right at home. Besides breakfast, they have a wide variety of sandwiches, salads and specialties of their own.
Upon arrival, we could not help but notice a very popular dish at a minimum of three tables, the cannoli pancake. Naturally, we ordered it…and it was delicious. But don’t try to eat it all by yourself, unless you are feeling very ambitious.
The pancakes, or LOVE CAKES, as the servers called them, come in a variety of flavors ranging from whole wheat flour to cookie dough.
What’s more, they were 14 inches of deliciousness and cost no more than $3.10. One is all you need.
The rest of the items we ordered were not only mouthwatering and delectable, but aesthetically pleasing as well:
Irish Benedict
Eggs Benedict with corned beef hash instead of Canadian bacon- $8.00
Golden Light Belgian Waffles
With almonds, bananas and Jimmy sauce- $5.00
Spinach and Tomato Omelet
With home fries and whole wheat toast- $7.00
The Original Steve’s Diner is truly the perfect place for a casual outing with friends, brunch with visiting family or even a hot date.
