From their location, to their menu, to their patrons, Atlas Eats offers hipsters of the greater Rochester area an offbeat gathering place to boast about. Its humble and worn storefront, located in a residential area just over the Rochester-Irondequoit town line, is easy to miss so most of your friends won’t have discovered your quaint hole in the wall. Little do they know, inside is a restaurant which features cuisine from around the world for lunch, and dinner, and breakfast is certainly no exception.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical about the kimchee pancakes, but how many people can say they’ve eaten kimchee pancakes? What I encountered was a savory pancake, slightly vinegary from the kimchee, with a tang and heat tempered by yolk from a wonderfully poached egg. The combination of kimchee and dragon sauce were enough to convince me that boatloads of syrup and butter aren’t necessary for a truly delicious pancake. This menu item is a must.

My recommendation for the scrambled skillet (served with provolone, roasted red peppers, and sauteed spinach): pile up a bit of everything on to the homemade crostini. A great strategy with just one problem: as a born and bred Italian, I needed a bit more crostini.

Speaking of heartwarming, there are few things closer to my heart than biscuits and gravy. I have chowed down on quite a number of biscuits in my lifetime, but Atlas Eats makes the best bacon cheddar biscuits I have had the pleasure to try. Once you break through that thin outer crust, the biscuit simply melts in your mouth.

Now you can never leave without getting dessert, even if it’s only 10 am. I mean we had spent an hour looking at a display case full of 8 inch tall cakes, lammingtons, cookies (you name it) which was cleverly situated at one end of the dining room with a full view of the bakery behind it. The carrot cake was the house specialty and truly wowed with its layers of grated carrots, rum raisins, walnuts, and half inch thick layer of cream cheese frosting.

Did I mention everything on the breakfast menu is under $6? Try finding a plane ticket to Korea for some authentic kimchee for a better price. You will need to find some transportation here, however, as bus lines don’t run this far out of the city. But for a place that has continued to deliver food inspired by global cuisines, authentically executed, and at a price affordable for even the most thrifty college student, Atlas Eats is worth your dime and your time. Hey hipsters! You better act fast, Atlas Eats may cease to be a little known hole in the wall on this campus for long.
