Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Maid Café Is a Must-Visit in Toronto

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Queen's U chapter.

Toronto is known for being a multicultural paradise, especially when it comes to their food scene. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to discover this little gem of a café in the downtown core.

If you’ve never heard of the concept of a “Japanese maid cafe” then the idea may seem a little strange. In Japan, they’re very common and anything but weird. With a cute and bubbly atmosphere, delicious desserts, and sweet waitresses, it’s easy to see why.

From the moment you walk in, you can see the famous Uncle Tetsu cheesecakes being made. If the sight of those fluffy pieces of heaven doesn’t entice you, the smell of baked goods will.

Once you enter the café section, you’re given a warm Japanese greeting by the hosts, waitresses, and chefs. If you want some good vibes in your life, this is the place to be. The cute costumes and homey decor would make even the most cynical of people feel at ease.

The cuteness of Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese maid café only gets better once you order some food. The items are a bit pricey, but the taste and attention to detail make up for it. Besides, this is an ideal way to treat yo’ self and get Instagram-worthy pictures.

A perfect way to pair your dessert or lunch is with their matcha latte. Not only does it come with adorable art, but the taste is authentic. It’s not too sweet and you can actually taste the matcha. It’s the perfect partner to the generous amount of desserts you’re bound to consume.

Why choose one type of dessert when you can have all of them on one plate? With refreshing matcha ice cream on the side, this delicious platter of sunshine might be hard to share.

Uncle Tetsu cheesecakes come in multiple forms: the original (light and fluffy), the angel hat (moist and bouncy), and the lunar cheesecake (dense and creamy). There’s a type of cheesecake for everyone. On top of that, they come in flavors like matcha, chocolate, strawberry, and yuzu. What’s a yuzu? You’ll have to visit to find out.

If you’d rather skip dessert, the café also has savory options —  or maybe you’re just like me and want to order everything this cute café has to offer.

A fun option I tried was the omurice (fried rice inside an omelette and topped with ketchup). The omurice was decent, but what really stole the show was the adorable ketchup drawing the waitress left me. If that doesn’t make your day, I don’t know what will. Extra points also go to the soup, which was flavorful and warm.

If you ever find yourself travelling to the 6ix and want a unique eating experience, I suggest visiting Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Maid Café. I can promise that it’ll leave you feeling sweeter than a cheesecake.
