America has one of the highest obesity rates in the world and many of us who do our best to eat healthy wonder why. It’s because our country stands in solidarity when it comes to the price of healthy food costing more than fast food. The cheapest food tends to be the worst for us – and the only food some families can afford.
Other countries are able to control obesity rates is because healthier food is priced more reasonably, resulting in fewer people turning to fast food. With new companies such as Daily Table, our country might have the opportunity to start making healthier changes.
Doug Rauch, former president of Trader Joe’s founded the company when he decided that eating properly shouldn’t only be an option for higher income families. If you haven’t heard of it, Daily Table is a grocery store founded on the principles of healthy and affordable eating.
At Daily Table, you can bring home healthy items starting at under just $1. The first ever Daily Table was opened in Dorchester, MA, on June 14th, 2015, and has collected quite the following.
In an interview with Herbal House 365, Rauch expressed that he believes in promoting healthy eating, “The answer here isn’t a full stomach, the answer has to be a healthy meal,” he said. “When 49 million Americans aren’t able to eat properly, and…their health suffers — and they get obesity, heart disease, diabetes, in their teenage and young adult years — this is going to be a health care cost tsunami that hits all of us.”
Some would argue that grocery shopping takes too much time and that although the prices at Daily table are equal if not lower than unhealthy foods, fast food is just easier. However, Daily Table even offers a “grab and go” section in the store.
How do they do it? Rauch realized that with over 30 percent of our nation’s food being wasted, there must be a way to utilize that wasted food for cheaper. He also works along with vendors to purchase food from them that otherwise would go to waste.
Although the only current location resides in Dorchester, Rauch is already looking at new prospective locations and is planning on expanding into multiple other cities. As the Daily Table keeps expanding, American’s will have plenty of opportunities to make healthier choices with initiatives like this. Keep up the good work, Doug!
