There’s a bowl of queso for every occasion in Norman, Oklahoma. Whether it’s for lunch, a quick snack or celebrating with friends, Norman offers a cheesy fix. Check out the five places where you can find the best queso in Norman.
1. Game Days: The Mont
If you have never heard of or stepped foot inside The Mont, I encourage you to go there immediately. It’s super close to OU and Campus Corner. The Mont is a favorite among students and locals – especially on game days. In my opinion, The Mont deserves as much credit for their food as they do for their famous “Swirls” (a frozen sangria and margarita concoction). I order the queso every time with a side of french fries. The combo is superb. The queso is more on the thick and creamy side. It has the ideal balance of spices, meat and vegetables. No matter the occasion or mood I’m in, The Mont always leaves me with a happy belly.
2. Celebrations: Seven47
A popular restaurant by day and a lively bar by night, Seven47 is one of the best places on Campus Corner to eat, whether it’s for brunch or dinner. I consider this the best “special occasion” queso. Seven’s bright yellow queso is topped with fresh guacamole (and seasoned beef if you wish). The queso is best served with an ice cold beer.
#SpoonTip: Seven47 offers a dollar beer special on Thursdays.
3. Craving Authenticity: Tarahumara’s Mexican Cafe
This family-owned restaurant is located off North Porter Avenue. The best part about this place is their queso is free! They bring it out like they do the free chips and salsa. Tarahumara’s queso slides down your throat because of its smooth consistency. It’s even better combined with their salsa. If you’re looking for a very authentic Mexican restaurant, Tarahumara’s is probably the place for you.
4. Lunch: Torchy’s Tacos
Torchy’s Tacos is a fairly recent addition to Norman. The taco shop made its debut on 24th Avenue in summer 2016. This spot is a regular stop for OU students – especially because of its popularity among Texans. I consider this the best lunch time queso. It’s topped with guacamole, queso fresco, cilantro and Torchy’s signature Diablo hot sauce. This unique blend makes for just as unique queso.
5. Late Night: Fuzzy’s Taco Shop
Fuzzy’s queso is evidence that good things can come in small packages. Served in a little cup, people often think, “How can this be enough queso?” It’s actually very well portioned and fills me up every time. Tiny tomatoes, cheese shreds and chopped onions sit on top of the white queso, providing additional bold flavors. Paired with their thin, specially salted chips, I consider it to be the best late night snack.
