6 NYC Restaurants for a Turkey-Free Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at NYU chapter.

It can be hard being a vegetarian/vegan during everyone’s favorite turkey-oriented holiday. But thanks to the endless amount of restaurants in the city, skipping the turkey on Thanksgiving doesn’t mean compromising your gastronomic experience. So spend your time unwinding with friends, focus on everything you’re thankful for and leave it to one of these fantastic restaurants to serve you a delicious vegetarian Thanksgiving feast.

Blossom

At its two locations in the West Village and Chelsea, Blossom offers a special four-course Thanksgiving menu with options such as walnut-crusted seitan with herbed stuffing and pumpkin cheesecake with chai maple syrup reduction. Choose Blossom for a fine vegan dining experience in a cosy, candlelit atmosphere.

HanGawi

HanGawi puts a unique twist on traditional Korean flavors and packs its meat-free menu with creations that have earned its title as New York’s top vegetarian restaurant in Zagat’s 2015 Guide. Come ready to sit on the floor, barefoot, for a relaxed and authentic Korean dining experience.

Café Mogador

Located right off St. Marks, Café Mogador is a haven of flavorful Moroccan fare, offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options on its affordable Thanksgiving menu. Don’t forget to try a pot of the old school Moroccan mint tea, it takes me back to Marrakech every time.

Bunna Café

If you’re up for a trip to Brooklyn, it may be time to finally try some incredible Ethiopian cuisine this Thanksgiving. Bunna serves up varieties of flavourfully prepared legumes on a large, thin sourdough flatbread that is traditionally shared between two or more people. Be prepared to use your hands to artfully (or not so artfully) tear apart this vegan feast.

Red Bamboo

Red Bamboo serves great ‘vegan soul food’ in a chic yet casual space just off of Washington Square Park. Enjoy its hearty Thanksgiving menu complete with vegan mashed potatoes and bring your meat-eating friends to watch them as they slowly realize they’re not eating real turkey.

Pure Food and Wine

Everything here is raw, vegan, organic and gluten-free. If you have yet to try the raw food scene, this place may blow your mind with its artfully presented creations, such as a Hungarian Dobosh torte that will make you forget you’re eating raw. Located in the charming Irving Place area, Pure Food and Wine’s dark, romantic ambience adds to its modern charm and makes it the epitome of upscale vegan dining.
