In New York City, it’s not too difficult to find a hearty plate of pasta, whether you’re in the East Village, Little Italy, or even Greenwich Village. However, if you’re not trying to drop $20 (plus!) every time you’re craving Italian, I have a solution for you. Instead of using sad, store-bought pasta sauce creations, you can now purchase the “Only Original Alfredo Sauce” for an easy, yet heavenly noodle experience.
Created in 1908 by Alfredo di Lelio in Rome, the Only Original Alfredo Sauce is an all-natural sauce containing only four ingredients: Parmigiano Reggiano, salted butter, olive oil, and cultured skim milk. With precise ratios of each, the Alfredo sauce is sweet and buttery while still cheesy and salty.
The simple preparation required for the original Alfredo sauce is probably the 2nd best thing about it — after its taste, of course. It starts out as a solid in the refrigerator, but after adding it to a warm pot of fettucine with a few tablespoons of water, it will start to give your pasta a creamy, yet balanced, consistency.
However, the Only Original Alfredo Sauce is unique because it doesn’t contain any cream at all! The simple combination of the four ingredients above create a truly natural and addicting sauce— I treated myself to several servings.
To this day, Alfredo di Lelio’s family continues to serve his original sauce at their restaurant, Ristorante il Vero Alfredo in Rome. Meanwhile, if you can’t catch a flight to Italy any time soon, you can purchase this delicious Alfredo sauce at stores in New York City, including Zabar’s as well as Amazon, meaning that soon, Whole Foods will also be offering it as well!
Eating authentic Italian cuisine doesn’t have to be a hassle. You don’t need to be a master in the kitchen or even have a healthy budget. Thanks to Alfredo di Lelio and his family, the best plate of Fettucine Alfredo that you’ll ever have is just a click away!
