English Muffins Should Be Your New Kitchen Staple

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Northwestern chapter.

If you don’t already use english muffins regularly, it’s time to start. English muffins are incredibly versatile and easy to store and prepare. They keep in the freezer for a long time, and all you have to do is microwave them for about 30 seconds when you’re ready to eat. Below are some ways to use english muffins in ways that you might never have thought of before.

English Muffin Pizza

No pizza dough? No problem. English muffin mini pizzas have quickly become a quarantine go-to in my kitchen. This simple meal is easy to make and adjustable to whatever ingredients you have on hand. Unlike sliced bread or tortillas, english muffins are sturdy enough to mimic the hand-held nature of pizza. Spread a little sauce on each muffin half, add your favorite toppings and pop in the toaster oven.

English Muffin Burgers

Expand your burger horizons by swapping english muffins for burger buns. Their earthier taste pair especially well with plant-based burgers. Add your favorite condiments or sauces, and enjoy a new take on an old favorite.

English Muffin French Toast

English muffins have a sweet side too. If you find yourself in a breakfast rut, this twist on french toast is a great way to shake things up. Break out your favorite french toast recipe and substitute english muffin slices for the bread. Try different sweet and savory toppings like berries, nutella, honey or almond butter to make each batch unique.

English Muffin Sweet Toast

Keeping with the sweet theme, english muffins make a great base for sweet toast. Toast each muffin slice, spread them with cream cheese or ricotta, and add your favorite roasted or pureed fruit on top. To dress it up even further, drizzle over some honey or balsamic glaze.

English Muffin Breakfast Sliders

English muffins topped with fluffy scrambled eggs are one of the most satisfying ways to start the day. This carb and protein pairing will give you enough energy to last hours into the day. My favorite take on this recipe is cheesy pesto scrambled eggs on a whole wheat english muffin sprinkled with red pepper flakes. To elevate this breakfast further, add sautéed veggies to your toast before adding the eggs. I find that cherry tomatoes, onions, or mushrooms work best.
