The Upper Crust Pizzeria is award-winning restaurant (i.e. 2016 City Beat News Spectrum Award for “Excellence in Customer Satisfaction”) with branches located around the Greater Boston and Los Angeles area. With a plethora of pizzas offered from the “Classic Cheese” to “Pedro’s Steak & Gorgonzola,” to a build-your-own option, grabbing a quick bite with friends on a Friday night (or whenever, really) will definitely NOT be a regret.
As a busy undergrad college student, a solid pizza is definitely a necessity. Whether it be those grueling all-nighters, productive club meetings, after a fun night out, who doesn’t love a quick bite of steaming hot, cheesy, slice of pizza? Luckily for us Northeastern Huskies (and other students studying around the Boston area), Upper Crust Pizzeria is only a few minutes away (whether by foot or delivery).
Entering the store, the mouthwatering aroma of cheese, pepperoni, tomatoes and pizzas in general was already welcoming enough. We treated ourselves to three large pizzas, but let’s be real, we totally could’ve eaten more.
The Harvard Street (Margherita): Shredded fresh mozzarella, sliced tomato, fresh basil & fresh garlic
There’s a reason why this combo is known as “the classic.” Wtih the perfect combination of cheese, tomato and pizza dough, this was my personal favorite. The dough for these pizzas was particularly thin, with a crunchy crust to finish off the last few bites, Upper Crust Style. CHEESUS CRUST, that tasted amazing!
“The North End” and “The Swellesley”
The North End style is decked out with all of the best Italian classics: meatballs, ricotta cheese, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Roma tomato sauce and fresh basil. To all my fellow meat lovers — not trying this pizza would be a big missed-steak! The meatballs are perfectly soft, and the two types of Italian cheeses are fused beautifully together into a slice, so you can’t go wrong if you’re a lover of meat, cheese or just all things Italian.
The Swellesley is The Upper Crust’s edition of a pizza arrabbiata, topped with chorizo, Parmigiano-Reggiano, Roma tomato sauce, crushed red pepper, olive oil, and fresh basil. If “arrabbiata” rings a bell, it’s because you might recognize it from the classic pasta sauce with a kick. This pizza certainly SPICED up the end of my week! The infusion of mixed spices combined with Italian sausage was definitely a unique but delicious pair of ingredients to have on a pizza.
Spoon Northeastern’s Customized Pizza
If none of those first few pizzas were for you, don’t forget that The Upper Crust always allows you to create your own combo instead. The custom pizza above is a whole wheat crust topped with vegan cheese, prosciutto, and caramelized onions. Vegan cheese? Say what? For anyone out there who is vegan, lactose-intolerant, or just wants to step outside their traditional comfort zone, the option to design your own pie is perfect. With the hearty whole wheat crust and other classic toppings, this unconventional combination turned out to be pretty tasty!
On behalf of myself and Spoon Northeastern, I would like to say a big thank you to The Upper Crust Pizzeria for providing such a wonderfully delicious opportunity to try their scrumptious pizzas, as well the *surprise* pepperoni pizzas we each got to take home (as if we weren’t full enough)!
