Under The Radar: The Hummus Shop

The opinions expressed in this article are the author’s own and do not reflect the views of Spoon University.

Being born and raised in Miami (and having dined from Michelin Star restaurants to college dining halls and impoverished street grub worldwide) means that … I know what food I like and what good food SHOULD taste like. So, I am on a mission to find the Boston restaurants that are worth your time, effort, and money.

I was truly impressed!

The Hummus Shop is a small restaurant in Beacon Hill that I’ve been walking by all semester on my weekend walks around Boston. I finally tried it out this weekend and I’m ashamed to admit that I did not try it sooner.

Regardless of its size I had no problems getting a table and the staff were all fellow college students and super friendly. I will say this was a stumble-in on one of my walks that I do for my photography, so it was a much-needed refuel after wandering around.

The vibes of The Hummus Shop are very cute and cozy. I could see myself grabbing a bite and sitting around in the Commons on a good day snacking away. I tend to try to debunk the more hyped up places and see what is worth it. However, in my now 7 months of living in Boston I had only heard of this place one time.

How It works:

The Hummus Shop works by first picking what kind of meal you want. Then you go on to pick if you want it in a Hummus Bowl, Salad, or Pita sandwich. For the hummus bowls and salads, they have a bring-your-own-container deal where they charge you per pound instead of the set prices.

The options you can choose from for your meal are either;

THE CLASSIC:

Hummus topped with tahini, olive oil, Israeli salad, and microgreens

FANTASTIC FALAFEL

Hummus topped with crispy falafel, Israeli salad, spicy schug, tahini, and microgreens

CHICK’N SCHNITZEL

Plant-based chicken fried to perfection, garlic toum, hummus, spicy schug, Israeli salad, tahini, pickled purple cabbage, and microgreens

SABICH

Crispy fried eggplant, hummus, garlic toum, hard-boiled egg, Israeli salad, tahini, pickled purple cabbage, microgreens, and their famous sabich sauce- AMBA

Then you can pick if you want that in a Hummus Bowl, Salad, or Pita Sandwich, Overall the menu is varied as well as vegetarian friendly.

What I ordered:

I got the Classic, which the menu describes as “Hummus, Tahini, Israeli Salad, Microgreens. I also added an egg for some protein for a dollar extra, which was a whole hard-boiled egg that was sliced.

My gripe with this was there was a TON of microgreens. Now I’m all for getting those veggies in… but there comes a point where I wonder ‘Will I ever reach the other items?’. Also I didn’t realize the egg would all be in the dead center rather than just kinda spread around inside, which made for a few weird texture bites.

This was huge, so huge it was a full meal. It an entire pita that is sliced open, slathered in hummus and tahini, added with huge scoops of Israeli salad, and a heaping helping of microgreens. When I go back I would like to try their imitation chicken schnitzel but I stuck to what I knew I would enjoy for this trial adventure.

Speaking of enjoyment, I love hummus. I’ve had copious amounts worldwide, and let me just say, the garlic and lemon in this was amazing. It was so filling and tasty. They loaded this sandwich to. the. brim.

This dish got an 8.5/10 from me (as the lemon at sometimes a bit much and there were just so many microgreens)

Final Thoughts:

While it was a little hard to eat all in one sitting I will 100% be frequenting this one on my photo walks. The staff was super friendly, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was nice!

I cannot wait for the warmer months to roll around, as I can picture myself walking around Boston with one of these.

This is one of those spots I will be recommending to anyone asking for good food around Boston, and if you find yourself in the Beacon Hill area, it is worth the quick drop-in as the food is moderately priced with my meal only coming out to 15 dollars.

Overall this got an 8.5/10 for me. It went in my Beli as an 8.4/10. This is a place that is under the radar in the heart of Boston.

The Hummus Shop is located at 37a Charles St, Boston, MA 02114, and they are open Wed-Sun from 11:00-7:30
